thepope540's KLDE swap / build thread

No, I've been trying to decide on a game plan... Fix it to keep it forever, fix it and sell it, or sell it as is, and then I have to decide if I'm going NA or keeping the turbo. I could have it up and running in half a day, but I'd like to put a fresh timing belt on the new motor. On the other hand, the bottom end thats in the car may still be useable so I keep thinking I should pull the heads before dropping the motor. I don't really know what I want so I haven't made any decisions. I would love to have the car totally reliable and simple - I just can't decide what that looks like. The other option would be to sell it and my truck and get a forester and an rx7 or miata. That way I would have a true toy and something reliable for hauling and family duty.

^^^Forrester STI!!!

On the other hand, KL-DE + turbo in a Protege is amazing. I'm sure whatever you do will be sweet.

y not keep the truck and the protege. you will have the truck to haul abd you can use the protege as your toy

Thats an option, but the msp has been the most unreliable and difficult to own car I've ever had. Some of that, I've admittedly brought on myself, but its been a constant problem. Plus I would rather my toy not be the same car I drive my daughter around in. If I wanted to do an engine swap in a miata it wouldn't matter because I would still have my DD for daddy duty.

That is the truth but some how we still like these cars in the end.....

Wow. Reading this thread was like reading a good novel. But the end has me hanging! What are you going to do with the MSP now?

Great work and thank you for posting info for the rest of us and asnwering questions!

ps- you don't have any spare parts from the MX-6's you want to sell do ya? I'm swapping a KLZE into my P5. (naughty)

Thanks, :) The new engine has gotten a fresh timing belt, tensioner, and water pump. Plus I gave it a pretty good cleaning and painted up the valve covers. With any luck it will be in the car and running this weekend, but that partially depends on when a couple parts show up. I bought a new spring for the wastegate and some other little odds and ends that haven't gotten here yet.

One of the MX6s is long gone, the other may be sold sometime this week. I have someone interested in it for not much more than scrap price, but I'm ready for it to disappear.

I've been reluctant to post because I don't want to ruin my luck with the car, but its been up and running for about 3 weeks. Gas mileage is pretty crappy, but I still need to lean out my map a bit. I'm only running about 4 psi right now which still spins tires in 2nd, but at least it hooks up in 3rd. I can't wait to dial in the tune and then start to turn the boost back up. I'll post some current pics and video in the next few days.

im glad to hear that. and i think as long as you dont try to sell it then it wont break =)

dont sell you have an awsome build! Buy a $1000 ford escort for daddy duty and sell the truck to buy more toys for the speed!

My cousin came over last night and we street tuned for a little while. The car now idles flawlessly and is running much smoother. There are still some cells in the VE map that need work (especially during quick transitions from no throttle and then into it), but the tune is coming along. I need to double check my base timing and then I can start looking for any problems in my ignition map.

Pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The valve covers are satin black wrinkle finish, but the flash makes them look glossy. I'm debating manual steering and a complete AC removal which would clean things up dramatically. If the car doesn't sell I'm going to slowly work on getting the wiring and vacuum lines tucked. Everything is fully operational as it is, but I'd love to clean up the engine bay.
