miles off a tank

New question, old topic.

How many miles have you been able to squeeze out of one tank? (Resetting odometer at full, of course).

Ever noticed any difference between premium, plus and reg.?

I've gone about 450 miles on one tank before (all highway driving), until I got scared that I was gonna run out of gas (I was below E). Turns out I had almost a gallon left in the tank.

Here in Iowa, the cheapest gas is 89 octane and contains 10% ethanol. Then there's the regular 87 octane with no ethanol, and finally the "super" 92 octane. I use the 87 octane because I don't believe that ethanol is the solution to our energy problems and I hate running that crap in cars.

yeah what's the advertised capacity vs. what anybody has actually pumped in? Is it 14? Most I ever pumped was like 13 gallons, which was within 10 miles of the light coming on. Hmm I'm thinking 500 miles on a tank is a goal to shoot for, though probably not without a spare can of gas.

A thread has already been done about how long you can run after your gas light comes on. I believe I actually set the record (without tooting my own horn too loudly :)). I went like 60-something miles after my gas light went on, and even then I still pumped only 14 gallons - the capacity that Mazda states is 14.5 gallons for our cars.

I average between 310 and 340, but I have done 380 with plenty of highway driving. Haven't had the car that long, but that's what I'm getting the past couple of tanks, which is a LOT better than 250 miles on my old car (92 Ford Escort) ... and the Pro5 doesn't really take that much more gas, I dun think. I was REALLY impressed.

My best tank I ever had was 416 miles. That was with the light on for about 45 miles or so. The tank took 13.9 gallons to fill at that point. It's kinda sad that I remember that considering it was about 2 years ago.

I haven't really noticed a difference in octane ratings, 87 for me.

2002 P5 totally stock, 152,000 miles, 87 octane fuel. Just filled today 435 miles on last tank. I always hit 400 at least.

'02 P5. I get on average 430 miles on highway and street. normally fill up like 13.25 gallons. I guess if i kept driving to the full 14.50 I'll hit the 500 mile mark...well 499 and the 1 mile walk to the gas station.

As long as your driving was on the highway, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to eek out 500 miles (except for the guy who said he gets 270 - I think you need a major tuneup dude). Just make sure there's a gas station at mile #501. And don't do this too often - the fuel pump's not gonna like sucking all that crap off the bottom of your tank. That's why I always refill when I get to a half tank.

the fuel pump is always sucking the bottom of the tank, but I hear what ur saying. i dont run it all the down either!

I've hit 460+

I've put like 14.9 gallons in- and that's auto pump shutoff, not me blipping the pump to get as much as possible.

Just refilled today after 370 miles, all highway. The tank took about 11.5 gallons, and the light hadn't turn on yet.

my best MPT = 452.6

related:
best MPG = 45.51 (during cross country trip traveling between 45 and 55 mph)
most gallons filled: 13.437

each of these were on separate occasions.

45.51 mpg! Sorry man, I'm not buying it.

Yesterday my needle was just at (slightly on the high end) of the halfway mark at 270 miles. Now, I now the needle drops faster on the bottom half of the tank, but seeing as how our gas lights come on with 60+ miles left, I definitely think 500 miles is possible.

I'm running Seafoam in my tank this weekend, so I'll give it a shot. :)

The most I ever got out of one tank on my old p5 was 330 and that was riding with the gas light on. The light always came on around 280ish ircc.

I understand your skepticism, however, note my qualifying remark: "45 to 55 mph". This was during a cross country move where we were unable to drive much faster with a loaded U-Haul in the lead.

details of that fill up...
Date: 10/13/2004
Gallons: 7.025
Miles: 319.7

When you drive at those speeds on relatively level terrain, strictly on highways, with little to no load, with a properly running vehicle, then you are virtually guaranteed to get outstanding MPG.

Under normal circumstances I get 28 to 30 MPG, but I'd need to run the vehicle's lifetime MPG to verify.

EDIT: lifetime MPG for this car purchased new in August 2002: 29.26 as of my last fill up on 6/4/2009.
