Brake problem?

Ok here's my little problem. I have a 97 protege SE with 215000 km. Two months ago the master cylinder was changes. Now, once in while my brake pedal feel extreamly hard. It does brake but the pedal feels like stepping on bricks. Also it seems that once the pedal pressure gets hard the brakes are not fully disengaged. The problem dissappears after a couple of minutes.

Can I assumme that I have a defective master cylinder or is there somthing else wrong?

Update. Master clyinder was defective and replaced. Thank God for WARRENTY!!

The front calipers were also rusted pretty bad and prevented the pads from completely disengaging. I suspected the defective master was also preventing the capilpers from disengaging. Unforunately it caused the fromt pads to wear out and had to be replaced.

All in all I'm happy again.
