backfiring

flooding the engine right when the throttle plate closes and there is excess fuel from being WOT. Also will occur on cold starts cause the engine adds a little more fuel cause the IVAC is open and it is adding more fuel for the extra air.

the simple answer is too much fuel getting through the engine into the exhaust, then exploding when it hits the hot exhaust pipes.

backfiring will kill your cats (if you have any) in very short order if it happens repeatedly.
