2007~2015 Changing CX-9 transfer case gear oil (photos)

If all 4 wheels are in the air and you put it in drive just the front wheels are going to turn, which the computer is going to interpret as the front wheels spinning so it will engage the awd.

    So long CX9

Traded the CX9 in for a Buick Enclave yesterday. CPO car, loaded, and most importantly has the towing capacity to properly haul the bigger boat I bought this spring. Put a couple hundred miles on the Buick yesterday bringing it home and first impressions are it has a far smoother ride, much more...

    2016 Transfer case

The fact that they have a recommended fluid change schedule means there is almost certainly a fill and drain plug.

    color choice regret ?

I regretted choosing black on our Murano, the vehicle before the CX-9. It looked amazing when it was clean but with black "when it was clean" is basically just 1-2 hours after washing it. Black shows EVERY spec of dust, dirt any tiny imperfection. Never again on a daily driver.

Hard Gear shaft when car is on slanted surface

The clunk when going to drive is a common issue and will require replacement of the transmission control module. I just had this done under warranty on my 2012. The dealer will probably try to flash an update to it first and if that doesn't work they'll replace it.

2007~2015 Changing CX-9 transfer case gear oil (photos)

I definitely does not have a regular change interval because Mazda officially doesn't have a procedure for changing it. It's also definitely NOT a lifetime fluid in the real world, unless you define "lifetime" as the 30-50k life the transfer case will have if you don't change the fluid. I'd try...

    "Metal-on-metal" noise when turning

That's quite a jump to conclusion with so little go on. Could be just as easily be something minor like a wheel bearing. Could even be a bent disk brake shield that rubs the rotor a little bit when turning.

    Gas mileage, how to improve?

Probably just a heavy foot. I thought something was wrong when we got ours too because the MPGs were so bad, until I happened to leave for work at the same time as my wife one day. As she left me in the dust after every stop sign I quickly realized why her in town mileage was so low. ;)

Good Transfer Case Story.....Giving some love to Germain Mazda in Columbus, OH

Russian shops must get slave labor rates compared to US shops then. 9 hours at a dealer here in WNY is $900-$1125 in labor alone.

    CX-9 for 6 people - worth it?

2012 here and with the 3rd row up you have very little usable trunk. We did an overnight wine tour with 2 other couples and took our CX-9 (seating 2+2+2). Even with just small overnight bags, a small 25qt cooler and some snacks we had stuff piled above the rear window and had to put our wine...

If it was me I'd just disable the DRL.

Moisture in headlight how to get it out

Didn't realize the bumper had to be removed to get the light out. That being the case I wouldn't waste my time trying a fix that might not work and I'd just swap it out for a new one.

    Gas mileage, how to improve?

Sell and buy something that isn't a 7 passenger 4300lb AWD SUV. There are no miracle improvements for MPG in modern vehicles, despite what snake oil filter manufactures claim. If you could gain 3-4mpg by using a different intake/filter the car would come with one from the factory. Manufactures...

Moisture in headlight how to get it out

It's getting in because the sealed unit has failed. Probably just wasting your time trying to get it out since it's just going to get back in again. If you want to try fixing it I'd remove it, dry it out good, then put some soapy water around all the edges where two pieces of plastic meet...

Good Transfer Case Story.....Giving some love to Germain Mazda in Columbus, OH

+1. Dealer labor is way too much to do this job for $135. Pics of them with a transfer case out of the vehicle or they're BSing you. Also, not surprised that Ford has a well documented procedure for sucking.

    Lots of drivetrain issues

Strangely enough, dealer wasn't able to reproduce it. They put 52 miles on it trying, then filled it with gas, washed it and gave it back. We took it on a little 3 hour road trip this weekend and it didn't do it once. I don't get it because it was consistently doing it after about a 15-20 minute...

    Lots of drivetrain issues

Bump... Transmission is making the bad clunk going into drive again any time it's been driven long enough to get hot. Back at the dealership today, basically just waiting for the call that they're swapping the trans.

New Member here: I just test drove a cx 9 signature - "dreadful A/C" is correct

"The AC isn't that bad, you just have to park the car in the shade!" LOL... Yeah, pass, looks like I'll be looking elsewhere when we replace our CX-9 next year. Pretty ridiculous that Mazda couldn't get something as simple as having a properly sized AC for a full sized SUV right. AC temp at 40...

    Anyone has 2012 CX-9 Service Manual ? ( not the owner's manual )

I've never seen one around online for the 2012 but so little changed between 2008 and 2012 you should be fine with the 2008 one. They changed the grill and the radio/climate control a little but those things aren't really covered by a service manual anyway, short of how to remove and replace them.

Break booster fail, caused other issues with vehicle as well. Strange idle etc.

I guess in his case the brake did break though. :)
