I have been looking around and i think newer mazdas have th esame shifter type as my 89 323 gtx. Look familiar?
what shifters do you guys have?

Same here... TWM and the only shifter that might be better would be a Rally style, in-line, ratcheting shifter. If they produced one, and the cost was not prohibitive, I would buy one.
But also keep in mind that the later shifters are cable operated. Yours is probably a single steel link type?
