slow to react temperature readout

It is just under 100 degrees right now and when I got in the car and started it the readout said 81. I realize it doesn't instantly change, but the problem is typically when it gets noticeably hotter between when I park and start it again it takes about 45 minutes to get to the right temperature.

I spent an hour running errands with 15 minutes of driving being the longest stretch and by the time I was done it had climbed to 85. If it does like usual then when I start it this evening it will read 85 for the first 15 minutes or so and then start very slowly climbing over the next 30 minutes to what the actual temperature is.

Anyone else run into anything like that?

I remember reading before that the sensor is behind the bumper so I'm hesitant to go to the dealer with it as I'd rather live with a non-functioning temp gauge then end up with a scratched up bumper.

woops, I didn't search Electronics.... which would make sense as to where the thread would be... I guess the heat is getting to me.
