Roof Rack For The Mazda5 Thread

Oem rack and wind noise when sunroof open

I own a 2012 Mazda5 GT and recently found a Mazda5 OEM Roof Rack that came off of a 2008 model in a classified ad for $30. The rack was missing the front left rubber foot pad, so I had to order a set of 4 from the Mazda dealership. Please note that I was told the foot pads on the 0000-8L-L09 rack cannot be purchased separately, only with the base rack itself. Fortunately, I had the older 0000-8L-L06 rack. I have a sunroof that I like to use during the spring and summer months, but my problem is that I have alot of wind noise when my sunroof is open since installing the rack. I found out that there are 4 cheap plastic pieces that come as an accessory with a new oem rack that are placed on the bars that help to eliminate the wind noice. I have tried to find these pieces separately by calling the two local dealerships, but they tell me that these pieces cannot be ordered alone. If anyone has the OEM Rack with these pieces attached, do they help with the wind noise at all? Please let me know. Yakima has a plastic part called a "wind jammer" for its round bars that is said to eliminate wind noise, so I tried the product on my square bars. It does fit the bars, but has not helped with the noise while my sunroof is open.

The plastic wind diffusers do in fact work but they definitely do not completely delete all noise. They mainly help to avoid that annoying whistling noise. You'll have to try different locations to suit you. I found that having the two smaller ones at each end of the front bar and the one large one right in the middle of the front bar works the best. The rear bar has no diffuser on mine. Good luck!

Just goes to show you even after you buy the car, the dealership tries to keep pulling money for your pocket. The part number for the 4 roof pieces is CG36-V3-84E. Don't forget who told you :)

Okay, I'm new to this roof rack thing. My Mazda5 doesn't have sunroof, so I'd like to get one that is low as possible, any recommendations?

I agree. I've got one on my 2. I have to be very careful when putting on the bike racks so I don't scratch my roof, and due to the aero shape you are slightly limited with accessories. Other than that, it looks awesome and I get many compliments on it. People are suprised when I tell them its aftermarket. Also the rubber strips running along the crossbars are super grippy.

I went with the Thule Aero bars. I noticed no increase in noise - but I'm sure I will once I get the bike rack mounted.

I did loose the use of my sunroof, which is disappointing. It will still vent, but won't open all the way.

I just got a set of racks from CarID. These ones specifically http://www.carid.com/2009-mazda-5-roof-racks/rola-roof-racks-4028592.html nice and affordable, good reviews too. The Mazda is with the girlfriend at work, I'll post back after the install. One thing I'm not sure about is if they can be left on in the winter. I'm not worried about the racks, hoverever I am worried about the car. Does anyone know if I can leave them on year round?

Hi all! Wife and I just bought a 2013 5 touring w/o the moonroof. We're new to roof racks so we have some questions.

From what I've been reading the Rola roof rack setup seems to be the best, but is this a good choice if we plan to leave it on year round? Does the rack have a way to prevent theft or do the locks apply to other types of roof racks?

Also, with the oval style bars is there a certain type of box we should look at, or do they all work? We would probably need something with a 16' or 18' capacity since we road trip with a stroller + bags.

Thanks!

Yakima Whispbar, Skybox 2010 Mazda 5

Based on this helpful and encouraging thread, I ordered the Yakima Whispbar roof rack for my 2010 Mazda 5, along with the Skybox 16s. I picked the Whispbars for aesthetic, wind resistance, and noise reduction reasons. Picked the Skybox 16s for much the same reasons, and it seemed large enough to hold what we'd need it to.

That looks nice!

Am I correct in thinking that the base of the rack feet bolt to the stock mounting points, and the rest of the rail is removable just by unlocking it with a key?

@GBean
get the Thule Aeroblade load bars.they fit the fixed point of the Mazda 5, they are really nice.Unlike the Yakima racks I read somewhere that they recommend us to buy Thule rack cause they make it to fit the fixed point and they don't ( and never will )

What size should I get? One site I saw listed the 47 inch size for my car but my existing bars on my Mazda 5 2010 are the 43 inch. I want to replace it because of the looks (not necessarily the noise since it doesn't bother me).

My wife and I got an Inno rack set for the roof or our Mazda5. We use it for kayaks mostly. It works nice and installs/uninstalls easy, but it is noisy if you don't have the wind deflector. We learned that the hard way and ordered it soon after the initial installation. It is not as streamlined as some other brands, but it is sturdy and a good value for the money.
