Rattling during cold start

Well my wife goes to start the CX7 about a week ago and for the first 2-3 seconds after it starts I hear a noise. Sounds like a bearing or something inside the engine.

We get it to the dealer, from what I could decipher from my wife there is some variable valve timing gear that is the culprit of the noise. That isn't the worst part.....they bascially threaten that if it happens again that it may not be covered due to the aftermarket intake and blow off valve! I thought dealers had to prove that the parts caused the problem.(scratch)

At least it is getting fixed.....but she is dying right now. They gave her a Nissan Versa as a loaner!(boom02)

Hi there,

I have recently faced the same problem. I live in Russia and the nearest dealer is located 500 km (more than 400 miles) away.Unfortunately we do not have good enough specialists in this area yet, those who would have perfect knowledge about cx-7 engine. As you have already mentioned, for the first 2-3 seconds after the engine starts the noise is coming and then disappears straight away. i have suggested that i have the same problem as yours. Could you tell me please which parts were broken and changed in your CX-7 regards this problem. I would also really appreciate if you could give me the phone number of your dealer OR the person who was dealing with this particular matter.

this sounds similar to an issue on the protege. basically what happened there (and i assume its the same or similar) is there are butterflys on the intake manifold that are only open when its cold. once the engine warms up they close. the rattling means they might be loose, which could be a major problem if they shoot through your IM into your head...

I believe there is a TSB on the variable valve timing mechanism. I don't remember the problem but, was connected with a drive pin? that needs to be replaced. Isolated cases so no recall at this time.

I had the same thing happen to my cx-7 except i took off my cai and bov when i took it in...warranty covered it and they said its was a common problem
