Hey guys im a ford guy and not familiar with mazda setups, that being said my girlfriends dads car is a 2002 mazda protg and on his way to work he went to shift up and the clutch pedal depressed with no resistance. he had to cast off the road as his pedal wasn't functioning properly. I am not able to get it into a gear so I towed it home and im going to look at it tomorrow. problem is as I stated above im a ford guy so I don't know what systems these run. is it a hydraulic clutch? does it use the brake fluid reservoir? and are there common clutch issues I should address and inspect while im under it? thank you all in advance, im just trying to educate myself and prepare myself for inspecting and repairing this.

It is a hydraulic clutch and yes it uses the brake fluid reservoir. I lost pressure in my clutch hydraulics once due to a tiny split in the flexible line just a little ways up from the the slave cylinder (near the top of the transmission). I'd check and see if you are losing any fluid there. Just follow the hard line from the slave until you see a flexible hose. It's about a $10 part from Mazda and is replaced pretty easily.

Not that it changes the answer to this particular question, but you posted this in the Mazdaspeed Protege section, which is supposed to be specific to 2003 Mazdaspeed Proteges.

Clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder or hydraulic line from the master to the slave. It's the same setup Ford/Mazda has used on FS equipped vehicles since 1993.

The Protege and Escort share a lot of parts. :)

You're still a Ford guy.

My first car was a '95 Ford Escort... not exactly a fun or desirable car. Without knowing much of anything about Mazdas or Proteges at the time, I bought my MSP, popped the hood, and the first thing that crossed my mind was "I've bought another escort." They really do share a LOT. If you're a Ford guy, you can be a Mazda guy too.
