P5 performance

Audi A4
Hey all,

This is my first post here and it actually isn't about my car. My buddy bought a P5 and is now trying to figure out what he can do to increase performance relatively inexpensively.

I come from the VW/Audi world and have a chipped A4. So my first assumption was to have him chip the ECU. That shows how little I know about Mazda's because after doing a little research it does not seem like that is an option.

So I assume an intake and exhaust would be good steps. What is the concensus here for a intake and exhaust (companies, models)? What are the approximate hp increases for each on the P5?

What other mods are the best bang for his buck?

Now with my Audi...the dealerships suck when it comes to warranty if you have modded your car, to the point of voiding it if they find you are chipped. Do the Mazda dealerships care if you mod the cars?

Thanks guys....I look forward to learning about the Mazda's.

Dan

Intake (I like Injen), header, exhaust, and fly wheel

buy my nitrous express- COMPLETE kit. $999.

and mazda gets kinda anal, but not too bad, if its something that is a 'mild' mod its ok. at least with my dealer.

when i had just intake/exhaust i went to my dealership for a few oil changes and such, they never cared, but i just guess it depends on the dealership, and with i/catback you will maybe see around 8 whp on a p5

no...no....no....

buy my Brand New Turbo Kit. $2,000 and more fun!! :D :D

Intake header and exhaust would be a good place to start. You won't get much out of it but a more drivable car. There have been some bad issues about chipping the FS-DE.

intake and exhuast then headers if they're legal where you live since they eliminate the primary cat

of course you could just gut the primary cat and install a high flow secondary one.... mmmm

Truthfully..I would stay away from header...or intake & exhuast..They are really for looks on a P5...

The will give you no more than 15whp!! If you want some really fun..go w/ a nitrous kit..or turbo kit!!

Chas

P.S. did i mention i am selling my nitrous kit? Check out my sig for detials

Well.....if it were my car I would definately be looking at a turbo upgrade and/or NOS, but he is not a car guy and is only really interested in spending a couple hundred dollars here and there to make it more fun to drive.

So injen is recommended for the intake? Is this a prety easy diy project? Any issues with MAF and temp sensors after making the swap?

By the way we are in MA. Someone above mentioned location.

Thanks again.

Mazdaspeed Exhaust
Kartboy shifter bushings
Kartboy or MSP/MP3 shifter

These 3 items make the P5 much more enjoyable to drive. The intake and exhaust make add a few hp, but I think most buy them for better looks and sounds. I did.

you are such an ass :D
granted you're right but you could be nicer :D

what matthew was trying to express and his distain for other members got in the way was that if you search the threads on this board then you will find the answers to almost any question you could have as a newb to the Protege platforms...

No offense taken. I was waiting to see how long it would take before someone said "Look it up before asking" (evil)

If it makes anyone feel better I did search though and found too much crap in other posts related to horsepower, intakes, etc. with no one really addressing what I was asking specifically (plus I got tired of going through all the posts). Besides that the posts seem to stray far from the initial question so I figured I would just start a new one.

So stop your :'( and answer the questions rather than changing the topic...just kidding. :D

you cannot buy just the MP3 or MSP shifter - the dealer part number lists it as the entire linkage which will cost you a fortune. The aftermarket shortshifters are well worth thier price.

Very good info in your faq. I actually did not come across it when I searched.

See my noted below about a few things I think would be helpful to add in.

1. The approximate HP increases for the different types of intakes. Since the increases are going to vary based on the car (an increase of 8hp on an Acura doesn't mean the P5 will have the same increase with the same intake.) And we all know that companies usually pad their numbers so info from other owners is always better.

2. Approximate increase in HP for exhausts. Somewhat of the same deal as above.

Thanks for the info though...good stuff.
