Hey fellow speed'ers!! Just picked up a 09 MGM GT couple of weekends ago and this thing brings a mouth-tearing grin every time I drive it. Fantastic combo of speed and utility.
Went to dealer looking to buy a White one. It looked great from pics, shows off the lines well and nicely contrasts with black trim on the car. But in person, the 'pearl' in White turned me off. It gave a flashy, Lexus/Toyota aura, not what the speed3 is about. MGM didn't have instant attraction of White, but it has grown on me as the best color on the car. Slight blue in midday and shade/indoors, slight green tint in early morning/late afternoon sun.
Of course I should have enjoyed this 2.5 years ago, when I put an order in for a 07 CB. But a week after placing the order, I rolled my CRX that I was driving at the time and needed a car immediately. I made a mistake of test driving a GTI, and walked out with one few days later, thinking it was good compromise with wife's needs of refinement and features.
GTI is a nice car, I chipped it and had coilovers so it was fun to drive. But I realized I prefer cars with more character, ones that 'talks' to the driver. It's sad that almost all modern cars are becoming more and more disconnected, with electric steering and throttle, different implementation of auto trannies, etc.
Before the CRX I had a 350Z that I sold due to oil consumption problems, before that SVT Focus, great handling car but powertrain was lacking. Before that I had a 02 WRX that I modded with most bolt-ons and coilovers.
Anyway, I love how everything is deliberate. I can feel the clutch engaging. I can feel the road imperfections. I can hear all the mechanical noises. And that exhaust. Got to be the best sounding stock exhaust on the planet. I find myself revving it at every stop light(lol2). Biggest surprise is that glove box - bigger than trunk in my sister's Miata.
One concern I've noticed is, does the motor run really rich? I see soot collecting in exhaust tip even after driving up n down the driveway.
The car is close to perfect from the factory and I'm very pleased with it, for now. Only thing I might change is reduce 'floatiness' when going over bumps at high speed.
Too bad aftermarket support is not huge for the 3.
Well, hope to hang out here to learn and contribute.
