No sound from stereo - intermittent

Hi,

I am working on a 2002 Mazda Demio and the stereo has intermittent sound, currently no sound at all. I have changed the unit and there is still no sound. I have searched for a wiring diagram but can find nothing, so is there an amp or similar that I am missing somewhere? I would have thought that given there is no sound at all there must be some central place before the loom splits to the individual speakers where the fault could be found. If it was something with the speakers then surely just one would stop working.

Assuming you have the HU out, put a couple pieces of 18 guage wire in the + and - speaker leads. Then just put the other ends of said wire to a + and - of a AA battery and listen for some feedback from that speaker you are testing. If you hear that for each of the speakers, you know the speakers/wiring is good and it's a HU problem.
