I thought the same too, but according to the link posted by evil monkey...

State Police said troopers working at a nearby truck-exhaust checkpoint at the Great Egg toll plaza rushed to the scene, only to have their rescue attempt foiled by flames from the burning car.

So it was not a chase...that article says the police were looking for a fact like a medical condititon...but I think it was just a suicide

Because most of us are on our way to work, or something else important (to us). We have cell phones, I can promise you plenty of people called 911 when they saw that.

NJ has alot of roads, and a very dense population. I see accidents on a near daily basis, vehicles ripped apart and/or in flames on a monthly basis at a minimum. In the summer - it gets even more common to see nasty wrecks. That's why our insurance rates are so high.

I think I agree... that car was hauling major ass, at least 80 if not more. I suppose the foot could've been stuck on the accelerator due to a 'medical condition', maybe... but think suicide is a better fit. Damn shame either way.
