how do you know if you're ordering a redesigned EGR valve?

I've read in a post, and also been told by a service manager, that Mazda redesigned the EGR valve that's been causing everyone so much trouble. After cleaning mine 4 times over ~16000 miles, I'm ready to buy a new one. The question is, how do I know if I order/receive a redesigned EGR value or one of the 1st version (the faulty one)?

Autozone, for instance, lists 2 OEM numbers.. does this have something to do w/ it?

Yeah that sounds like a redesigned one.. the original was an FP part, so it was made for the 1.8.. hmm I don't remember if there's an FP in the cast on the egr valve though, I don't think I ever took and pics of my valve the 5-10 times I've had it off haha

what we need to understand is what did they do to "redesign" it??

From the TSB, courtesy the Protege FAQ:

Symptoms and Conditions
Some customers may experience an intermittent or constant rough idle
with MIL illumination and DTC P0300 and/or P0401 being stored in memory.

This condition may be the result of rust accumulation on the EGR valve
shaft causing the valve stick open. A shield has been added to the valve's
body to prevent reoccurrence of this condition
.

Repair Procedure
When you encounter a vehicle with this concern inspect the EGR valve
for this condition and if necessary replace the valve with the improved
part.

EGR VALVE Part No. FSY1-20-300-9U
Gaskit Part No. JE27-20-305A

thanks! a shield...? okay

That "shield" doesn't seem to help much.
I had my EGR valve replaced Oct.2004 with part# FSY1-20-300 which has the shield.
A month ago it started acting up...removed it last weekend...sure enough the valve was sticking in the open position. But its been fine for a week now after cleaning.

I see that the part# quoted in the TSB has a -9U at the end.
onlinemazdaparts.com shows "Part number fsy120300 was superceded by part number FSY1203009U"
Anyone know if theres any difference between that part and mine?

^when you modify a design - you would (logically) add the additional designator to the end - not just issue a brand new part number. Only clean-sheet new parts would get a new part number.

Usually the p/n scheme is to use a logical breakdown of the engine/function/part to help locate it. (atleast that is the way we do it! :)

its under warranty now

I just had my egr valve replaced under extended part warranty, car has 170 000km on it so it is not under any 'normal warranty' that was purchased. I was told that three months ago if I brought it in then I would have paid for it.

This is the second time it was replaced, the first replacement was also a redesign(shield) This time it has extra hoses also, taps into the coolant line and also has a vent hose, apparently this will help it from collecting moisture and seizing.

So if you start to experience the on again off again crappy idle this may be the free fix.

I was told it will have a seven year unlimited mileage warranty.
