After more than one year in place, I was unable to remove the hitch. Tried spraying with some oil every day for a week, and with a sledge hammer, but still no solution. So I came up with an idea to use a jack, and that worked for me. After cleaning and lubricating it now works well.
The arrangement I used: Some rope under the jack and around the hitch. The pliers holds the lock in open position. As the jack lifted the car, the hitch got loose.
