Okay as you already figured out I'm a newb, I have been reading and searching and really dont understand what what the offset is on wheels are for. So can someone please explain it to me. (rei)

The higher the offset the further into the wheelwell the wheel goes in. So if you get 17x7's and one had a 42 offset and the other one had a 48. The 42 would stick out further. For front wheel drive you usually want a higher offset so you can fit wider rims or have no rubbing. Hope that helps.

offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to where the lug nuts meets the hub. thats why lower offset wheels have the bigger lips

Isn't where the lugnuts meet the hub usually considered the center of the wheel?

The center of the wheel width wise to where the lug nuts meet the hub
