1999 Mazda Protege
Well i am in the process of getting an actual value for my 1999 1.6 L Protege. I will have numbers soon. I am wondering if anyone can advise on a diagnosis path to make sure i am getting the most out of my fuel. Let me say i had a few codes present and my mechanic friend cleared codes and cleaned MAF sensor. No codes have been produced since. The codes mentioned clogged EGR tubes and MAF stuff.

The car runs smooth when travelling but seems to idle high in park and startup. Where should i start? The MAF sensor was not replaced but cleaned and seems to be working fine. I have brand new air filter with no cracks in air hose. Should i check plugs and injectors? remove EGR valve and clean? Where can i locate the EGR tubes to see if they are carboned up? Should i just bite the bullet and replace O2 sensor? The car has 106,000 mi. on it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you
