Guys to eliminate that gap... just make a 1/8" or even 1/16" spacer right might work. Then you have no gap from any angle 
This is exactly what I wanted to do to mine as well, but was worried the tweeter would be far from the mid driver and mess with the sound stage. I've read with components it's best to keep the 2 within 6" of each other for best sound. That's why kick panels have integrated tweeter pods. I think I am going to try nikbrewer's method first. If the sound is too low I'll move up to those pods.
