2012 CX 9 + Deer

In case anyone was curious this is what it looks like when you hit a deer going 60 mph.

Damage

Culprit

Everyone was okay and the car is being repaired (just over 10k in damage)

wow, sorry to hear that Rader582, main thing is everyone is safe and okay (well, except for the deer),
cars can be replaced.

hmmm, when I saw what was damaged and what needed to be repaired,

I thought maybe you can now upgrade from 2012 design to new 2013+ Kodo design headlights and bumpers, I don't think insurance company cares they just give you an estimate and a check,
you can take it to any mechanic to get it fixed

I'm pretty sure the underpinnings and mounting locations are still the same so
it's just a matter of ordering 2013+ parts i.e hood, bumper, headlights, etc.

WOW!! Glad everyone is ok! No damage any higher than the hood is pretty good too (from a safety perspective). I've seen these collisions where the deer get's flipped up into the windshield glass.

How long on that extensive of repairs? Insurance taking care of you OK?

Not a bad idea, though I would have the foot the bill for one of the headlights.

Do you have any reference where someone has done the switch already? Searching google and forums have come up empty for me.

Not very extensive considering but still has almost 3 weeks in repair/parts time. Airbag, seat belts, new bumper/headlight, hood, and radiator along with all supporting brackets and such was the bulk of it. Was actually hoping it was going to be totaled so we could upgrade, oh well. Hoping we do not have issues with the vehicle now as far as handling and feel.

Hi Radar582,

I don't think it's ever been done before,

but seeing that you'll have to replace all this stuff anyway because of the deer,

might as well make it look brand spanking new and trick your family thinking you got a whole brand new car ! LOL

you'll probably be the first to be driving a 2012 model with a 2015 front

anyway, I did a quick calculation for you,

looks like you're looking at $1500 for the main components (insurance should cover that)

eBay has the driver side headlight used in excellent condition for $250 {halogen version though}

{Xenon with LED daytime running lights runs $500}

see picture below :

main thing is to find a body shop that you can trust and willing to try to fit 2013 parts into a 2012 model,

I'm pretty sure it will fit, no way Mazda would have changed the internal structure that much,

it was basically just a refresh not a redesign

Are the fender's the same sheet metal for the 2013 as the 2012? That would be crazy if it is a direct swap, I could see a lot of people doing that to get a "new" look on their gen 1 CX-9's, lol.

I think Radar582 is in luck, same part number for side fender sheet metal for all years,

check this out,

just what I figured, Mazda only changed the plastic aesthetic pieces (Kodo bumper, Kodo grill, etc) and headlights,

I bet all the mounting locations are all the same,

I think you're right Voldsom, if you price it out, doesn't look like a huge deal to swap out the front and headlights,

might be tempting to some to give their CX-9 a whole new look, and sell their old parts on eBay or

junkyard to offset the costs

From looking at pics and comparing them, the fenders definitely looks the same. Since everything that is different is damaged, the swap would be very straight forward. I say do it!

Doing a little research on the bumpers. It looks like it should swap without too much issue as all the screws and general layout seem to be the same.

I second that ! might as well upgrade and make the car look new with an updated style
since insurance is paying for it and damaged parts have to be replaced anyway.
it's a win-win out of an unfortunate incident.

In the side by side comparison, the fender cutouts match exactly,
I do see an extra piece above the Mazda logo in the Kodo design,
but looks to be only aesthetic to cover the space due to the new
agressive grill design that juts out more forward then previous years

All is well. No one got hurt (almost aka the venison) and my wife gets to drive around my R32 now until her car is fixed, which I think she secretly enjoys.

Didn't get a chance to talk to the body shop today and they are closed all weekend so will have to give them a call along with the Mazda service department to get a second opinion on the matter if it isn't too late on Monday.

I had a low-speed impact with a smaller animal (probably a dog, but I like to think it was a coyote or a maybe a goat) back in August in my 2012 CX-9. It happened after dark in my semi-rural neighborhood and I was going under 30mph. The damage was limited to the lower grille area, breaking the black plastic mesh (smiley face) grille in several places and scratching the chrome trim strip that runs across it.

There was no paint, body or mechanical damage, thankfully. But I was blown away by how expensive the parts were to fix it! The lower grille lists for $457.97, the chrome trim strip is $164.38 and plastic surround for the grille is another $161.74! So just the parts for the smiley face grille alone cost almost $800!

The good news is that hitting an animal is covered by your Comprehensive (aka- Other Than Collision) coverage rather than Collision. Comp claims dont count against you at renewal time and increase your rate, but a Collision claim would! Small consolation.
