(2003 Mazda Mazdaspeed Protege 2.0l Turbo

I love the turbo coming out, but what about the internals? Have they gone with forged parts or are they using the same stuff that is in our cars now? Because you don't want to go and put 60 more HP on a motor that is not built for it.

Most likley they will use lower compression pistons and some type of fortified rods. So we can use them on cars.

I put this in another thread, but here it is again

It's sad to say it, but this car will not do very well. Think about it for a second. Our base price was $18,550, with all the chasis and suspension upgrades, and the rims, and so on. This car will be basically the same as ours, but with turbo, LSD, larger diameter axles. The turbo should be around $2500 extra, LSD is at least $1500, I'm not sure about the axles but I'm guessing at about $800 extra. That brings the price of this new speed 3 to AT LEAST $23,350. I WOULD SAY THAT WILL BE THE MINIMUM THEY COULD CHARGE FOR THIS CAR! And remember, it supposedly only has 170whp. Why would anyone buy this car. For 1 to 2 grand more you could get a WRX with AWD, larger displacement engine, and not to mention a huge aftermarket. It is a no brainer if you ask me.

I think this car will kick ass if the price is right. The MP3 is already the best handling car in it's class and that will only improve, especially with the limited slip diff. Also no car for this price offers this kind of sound system.

The 170hp is on the low side, but as mentioned before this is just a starting point because of the turbo. Some of the 150HP VW 1.8's are pretty damn quick, I see no reason why this car should be any different. Only difference is the VW's handle like pigs, this car will stick. Also, the Protege line is known for its reliability as we all know.

Remember they are not making too many of these, shouldn't be difficult to sell all of them. I bet they price it at about $21,500 max, maybe lower. Probably way wrong on that but what the hell.

I believe what BIGBLUE mentioned on another thread hit the nail on the head. I was ecstatic to see that another year (at least) of this 2.0 liter engine (and body style) will hit the streets. The more of them on the road, the better for us. We have such a small footprint in the aftermarket, we need this.

I envision beefed-up and TESTED parts falling into this (ugly) orange beast. Join me in thanking Mazda for scooting the yellow and blue out of production, ramping up interest, providing a future upgrade path and keeping the Zoom-Zoom alive.

BTW, if you MP3 guys are still hanging on to your Kenwood's, upgrade it to the Music Keg. Hot-swapping 10GB carts of MP3's. Sweet.

Thanks for the compliment Syzygy. I guess I'm thinking into the future here when we will certainly get Mazdaspeed owners coming here and I don't want to see a bunch of people dissin' the new owners out of jealously or whatever. I think Mazda is a great company and whether you have an MP3, a P5 or a Mazdaspeed, you will have spent your money well. I kinda hope that Mazda doesn't limit the production of this new model though because the more of them out there will mean the more aftermarket parts made for all of our cars.

Thanks for the link on the Music Keg....something to keep in mind although I don't know if I need to go 7500 miles without hearing the same song twice! :D

I've still yet to see anything about a Turbo'd Protege on the Mazda website, so me being a pesamist (spelling), I won't get my hopes up till Mazda Officially releases something. ProtegeTech isn't exactly an official Mazda site either.:) I don't mean to rain on anyones parade, but think I'm being realistic in saying "don't get too excited until there is an official statement by Mazda of America":)

Just for your info its the STOCK engine same 9:1 compression and everything jsut with a Mazdaspeed turbo kit added on which the kit isn'[t made by Mazdaspeed its made by Callaway for Mazdaspeed and installed Pre-Port onto the car before ship. I'm thinking with the 170HP rating its only running 5 PSI and not designed to run much more. I do have some info on how to make a stroker kit for our engines but I cannot devuldge that info right now....all I can say is look at the specs for a 7MGTE toyota supra turbo engine. You will be surprised :D

Hehe actually I think he's saying he knows how to up the boost on his own custom turbo...which I'm more interested in than the Mazdaspeed as I think it has more power potential does it not?

It has the same power potential as our cars it uses the same engine...I hate to break it to you but there are no forged internals in this Mazdaspeed "beast" it is just our engine with a turbo kit and LSD. My car has more power than what the Mazdaspeed does and its not intercooled yet. What I was saying about the 7MGTE engine is that the bore is teh same as our engine. Then take teh rods from a 99-00 escort SOHC (I know soudns weird but they are extremely strong rods)machine them a bit and machine the crank a bit and you have a 2.2L 20 PSI beast of an engine. I have exact specs on what to machine them too but thats my secret. :D

Does the vw 1.8t use forged pistons...how about the turbo neon/pt cruiser...or the supercharged mini? What reliability measures have they taken for the mazdaspeed in terms of forced induction(lowered compression)?. Aren't they providing the same warranty as all the other protege models? Are the specs we have now the final specs...are the hp and tq figures official? Wait until Mazda actually has the Mazdaspeed in the line up on the website...now it's just a promo.

Like i have said before it is a stock F block engine with a turbo kti on it. No lower compression or anything. Mazda offered the Miata with a turbo kit as a factory warrenties option at one point and that is all this is. Yes it is under factory warrenty but who know what will void it. If people screw with the boost and blow the engine i'm sure it will void the warrenty. There will probably be a clause in the warrenty of that it is only valid at stock boost levels. But I've said it once I will say it again...Its just our stock engine with a turbo kit.

Reminds me of Toyota and TRD with the supercharger kits...well in anycase I'm looking forward to checking it out and seeing what the mags report...check the thread about the mazdaspeed pro outrunning a wrx...

Do you think it would be possible to raise hp to 200 while keeping stock boost levels (intake, exhaust, intercooler)? I wonder how the dealers will respond to turbo protege's coming in for service.

Chdesign the Mp3 and the Mazdaspeed protege are technically not the same." An 2.0l engine with a slapped on turbo and intercooler." No my friend it's a (garrett T-25 turbocharged intercooled Mazdaspeed protege with (LSD) and a new drivetrain and new clutch disc with 4 wheel disc brakes. Now your saying that the compression ratio is the same as well as the borexstroke. The lower the compression ratio it is the better it is. For instance i know this isn't a honda but the old hatchback civic Si's compression ratio's were at 8:7:1. Our MP3 and Mazdaspeed protege are at 9:1:1, i think the smaller the engine the bigger the compression ratio should be, and the bigger the engine the smaller the compression ratio should be.

Actually you want an internally strong motor with forged pistons and a compression ratio under 9:1 to allow higher levels of boost and safer running of the motor with that additional power. My BPT has a 8.2:1 compression ratio with upgraded guts. The WRX has a 8.0:1, EVO has 8.8:1, and my old 1.6 GT motor had a 7.8:1 comp ratio. The MP3's 9:1 ratio isn't too bad really, it just needs some better internals to allow it to run higher boost levels. Does anyone know the size of the factory fuel injectors on the 2.0 liter motor? I think that is one of the reasons that the boost is so low as well as the reliability factor.
Brett.

"tritonheat1" so what ur saying is that the mp3/protege es will not share the same "f"series engine:confused:

f&^k i was hoping that that mazdaspeed protege was going to share the same engine ,but only difference would be the turbo." becaues if it did i would just wait till the car came out and buy the manifold off the the "mazdaspeed protege" and put it on my protege.;)
