If you have ABS, there is no speed sensor in the transmission. If you don't have ABS, there is a speed sensor in the transmission.

I havent seen that TSB for the protege5. I remember a thin piece of nylon on the top of my struts when I replaced them, but it was the thickness of a piece of paper. The front swaybar bushings are commonly a problem.

You should replace torn balljoints regardless of whether or not they are the source of your problem. Thats not safe. Have you checked the sway bar bushings?

Have you tested the wheel bearing by rotating the individual front wheels up and down and then side to side to test tie rod ends? The exhaust thing doesn't sound relevant. It's usually louder at some rpms. Hopefully you can jack up the car and check it out this weekend.
