Wheel size question...

Having just purchased at GT with the 19" wheels, I'm debating getting a set of 17" wheels and putting really good, aggressive snow tires on them. (We measure snow by the foot here in upstate NY) Then I'll just swap wheels/tires before the snow begins to fly.

Any idea what size wheel is recommended for the CX 5? 17" x 7.5" wide? Have other used a wider wheel in doing the same thing? Experiences? Suggestions?

Another Upstate NY CX5 owner. I run Hakkapeliitta 225/65R17 mounted on stock 17 in wheels from a older Mazda 3/6 I have used Hakkapeliitta for years and I am very happy with them.

We run 225/70x16 Blizzak DM-V1 winters on Mazda 3 wheels. The taller sidewall does absorb winter's bumps a bit better.

Good to know. I'm just up the road from you in Webster.

I too use the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV rubber on stock 17" CX5 aluminum rims. Super good winter tire, tough to beat. 225/65-17 is the stock tire size. Then I purchased a set of aftermarket rims for summer time.
If you stick with the 225/65-17, it will be the same size as your 19" so speedo won't be off.

It's the rim's I was really interested in next. I know 17's come in 7, 7 1/2, 8, ect... I think 7 1/2" is standard? Not sure. Maybe I'll just order stock CX5 17" rims.

The Sport and Touring trims of the CX-5 uses 17x7 wheels. So you can go with that.

I just put on my 245/65/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws to replace my stock 19s. So for I'm very pleased with them. No issues whatsoever. We don't see as much snow as you do in NY but I plan to make the occasional snowboarding trip once the season comes around.

I'll chime in also as I used to live in Webster - the place worth living!

If you happen to desire to go with OEM rims, then here are some specs that I've dug up:

OEM wheel common specs:

  • Wheel hub center bore: 67.1mm
  • lug bolt pattern: 5 x 114.3mm
  • Offset: +50mm

17" OEM
  • Wheel: 17x7", #9965-61-7070 (powder coat silver)
  • Tire: 225/65R17

18" OEM
  • Wheel: 18x7", #B45B-V3-810 (gunmetal) or #9965-22-7080 (powder coat silver)
  • Tire: 225/60R18

19" OEM
  • Wheel: 19x7", #9965-08-7090 (charcoal machined), #996-50-37090 (powder coat silver)
  • Tire: 225/55R19

Here are some tires that I know perform well in snow:

  • Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV
  • Bridgestone Blizzak WS80

For my 2016 CX-5, I went with the 18" OEM gunmetal rims and Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV tires. Tire World in Webster is a great place where I purchased the tires and mounting. For my 2016 Outback, I went with the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-80. Both tires are remarkable in the snow. However, the Hakkapeliitta tire will last much longer concerning tire wear and performance.

Here are some photos:

Don't have to "order" OEM 17's. I got mine on Ebay for a better price. They looked brand new (they were new vehicle take-offs).
