What have you done to your P5 today?

Since we’re doing milestone photos, here’s my daughter’s new MSP. We did a car swap (funny swapping a titanium MSP for a titanium MSP) and as I was getting ready to drive away she tells me “Im so close to 200 - just get a picture for me”

Interesting. They may have been machined to fit. I've heard of people on here doing that for Lexus wheels. I've seen a few Proteges online with the STI BBS wheels so people must be willing to go through the hassle. If it were me, I'd go the Mitsubishi route, as the Evo Enkei wheels I believe do have the same bore and do come in some good sizes for the Protege.
Can confirm that Evo OZ / Enkei wheels do fit very nicely with a slight guard roll on the rear, especially if lowered. Bore is the same, Evo 5 (silver) wheels require square shouldered wheel nuts and washers.

Both photos at stock ride height, 17" versions of both wheels

Changed out the passenger motor mount on my daughter’s MSP. It’s the 3rd Protege I’ve done this job on. Took about 15mins while taking pictures and cleaning as I went. The passenger mount alone was $42 and a full kit was $51 on Amazon. Make sure you get the kit where the passenger mount already had the “dog bone” pressed in.

HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART:
This car has a really good transaxle; no grinds and quiet. I noticed that sometimes there is a very mild “hitch” where it doesn’t want to move cleanly into 2nd on the 1-2 shift. Like if you are lazy and don’t pay attention, you will grind the syncro. BUT, after replacing this mount and also having front /rear AWR mounts, the engagement is much more positive and clean. I surmise that a large reason the trans in our cars have problems is less the trans and more the movement of the

I've noticed the exact same thing with the 1-2 shift, and I think my 2nd gear syncro is starting to wear out from occasionally grinding 2nd like that.

My worst gripe with my P5 is those mounts. I've never been able to find a good balance between reasonable NVH and smooth shifts and smoothness on/off throttle. Drives me nuts, but not going to throw any more money at it.

I've had good luck by replacing three of my four mounts so far with OEM ones, but they were spendy. While I drive spiritedly, I don't shift anywhere near aggressively, so maybe my needs are less.

Had a curious sound pop up after doing spark plugs, wires, and boots (not coils). Sounds like the lifter tick from my Miata, but some think it's a rod or bottom end.

Can you drive with the engine knocking?
What symptoms happen while driving with a bent rod?
Does the sound change or stay linear?

Chasing down a sluggish transmission from a cold start, I decided to change out the solenoids.
So here's my part list and costs and it drives like it's off the lot!

03/29/24 - Transmission Tune Up ($518m + $225l) = $743
IDEMITSU 30040092750 (M5) ATF Type M; 8 Quart $8 * 8 = $64
ATP B189 (Standard Replacement) Premium Replacement; With 3rd Hand Gasket $16
PIONEER 771111 Transmission D&E Shift Control Solenoid x 2 $45 * 2 = $90
PIONEER 771116 EPC x 1 $78
ROSTRA A48421 PWM x 3 $90 * 3 = $270
That's fantastic news. :) Not really related, but you made me think of this... Way back at 30k miles, I got my manual transmission fluid replaced *at the dealer*. Car immediately had intermittent trouble shifting, most noticeably from 1st to 2nd. I turned the car around and went back to the dealer, who replaced the fluid again. The car displayed the same behavior, and I just dealt with it for 30k miles, hoping it would break in. It never did, and it was a safety concern that entire time. I went to a Goodyear place at 60k miles and they replaced it, and the car shifted fine after that. I didn't dare change it again until 130k miles, whereupon I replaced the fluid myself. I've not had a problem with this fluid either. I don't know what the dealer put in there, but it didn't work well.

Well folks........fixin to sell the car sooooooooooo, there's a mountain of parts, some new, some never installed, some used, some oem, some aftermarket.....too many to even comprehend much less list. The original owner 100k mile car will be going as is. All this stuff is boxed up in garage and attic. Stuff like brand new MP3 splitter, untouched glo face gauges for auto, tein springs, etc list goes way deep......fuel controller with NA module/flyin miata voltage clamp/innovate wb 02 with gauge......when is the last time you've seen a Perrin fuel rail with liquid filled pressure gauge, header header and header - used and untouched one. So much I cant even think about. new alternator, original struts with about 15k on them, projector headlights, space cadet clear tails, magnaflow muffler....just goes on and on. Someone in TX come get bundle deal......Screw that eclipse, come get shitload of useful parts for whatever form of 99-03 Protege you might has. Emblems from around the world - astina, familia, allegro, genki whatever, south africa one, P5, 323 etc Rent a van pack it full. CRAZY INSANE BUNDLE DEALS

When is last time you've seen cabin air filter conversion parts for this car? Yep, got that crazy stuff layin around never done. Blue GT Spec stuff? You bet. 20 yrs of collecting goodies like this, some installed some wasn't yet.....

Where in Texas? We're in Houston.
Interested in alternator, muffler, headlights, header,

Hi, I figure that we need a thread that alows P5 owners to enter any mods or anything done to rides every day!!
Today I told my P5 in the face that it will get fixed very soon(waiting on some dow$$$)
This is at it looks like right now! I actually jumped on the hood, so it looks alot better. (hah)
I replaced the rear strut shock assemblies. Tomo it’s spark plugs and front brakes.

I have a mountain of stuff that needs to go to someone still in the protege game. We are moving and I don't have time to itemize and photo evry thousandth thing I have. I am ready to gift it to whoever can show up and load up a van or trailer or truck or whatever. There are no huge items like motors, trans or body carcasses, just portable useful mods and service parts and whatnot. I don't even know what all there is exactly, just that there is a ton of FREE stuff to come get......Katy, TX....

Did the valve cover gaskets today and right rear wheel speed sensor... next project is the shift solenoids A and B. FWIT i ended up buying a decent Autel scanner and ya know what i think its already paid for itself in that i can basically diagnose all my cars now somewhat properly then make a decision to take it to a shop or not for various things if needed.

Dang that doesn't sound good. What came of it (since your post was from mid-march and it's May now)?

It does sound like bottom end to me, but seems weird that it would start just after doing plugs and wires. And as far as I can remember, it seems like a knock would be a little more irregular.

My P5 is still chugging along. Of late, it's just been doing daily driver duty. Haven't done anything interesting to it, but I've definitely got a list. Just passed 199k, on it's way to 200k. I'm going to have to start looking at what it'll take to do a timing belt. Paint has taken a huge beating from the winter and abuse from neighboring cars and people walking past...makes me sad but it's the reality of having an old car. Lots of scrapes and door dings.

Need to do brakes...again. I've got a rear caliper that likes to seize when the parking brake is used, so I can't use that until it's fixed. Also need to do rear pads. Front rotors are warped...I replaced them only a few years back but I drive the car hard so not surprising. Front Hawk HPS pads still have plenty of life left. I'll probably just do rear brakes and leave the fronts until It makes sense to do a Mazda6 swap properly.

Couple of recent photos...cause why not
