timing belt replacement

Mazda states that it's non-interference. And we don't have a harmonic balancer... So, I don't really care what others say, it's non-interference. ;)

Isn't the crankshaft pulley the harmonic balancer on our cars?

As for interference vs. non-interference, here's where the debate stands.

- Mazda says non-interference
- Gates belt company says interference
- Some users have reported having their timing belt break, replacing the belt, and starting the car with no problems.
- Other users have reported having their timing belt break, and then having to take their head in to a shop to fix valves that got very slightly bent.

It seems that we have non-interference engines, but the clearance is so close that if conditions are just right, or if you have any kind of buildup on the valves or pistons, you could see some damage.
