I'll just have to ghettoize an SRI from some cardboard tubes, paper plates and scotch tape. Maybe a little cotton gauze glued over the end to serve as a "High Flow" filter.

No, you DON'T. What you are concerned about is keeping the flow velocity high enough to allow the gasses to escape.
