2012+ 16" OEM Wheels for the Mazda5 and Mazda3i SkyActiv - They're surprisingly light

Out of curiosity I just took one of my Sport's 16" wheels off and weighed it, thinking it would be on the heavy side. Mine came equipped with Bridgestone EL-400-02 tires, not Toyos, by the way. The Bridgestones weigh 20-22 pounds each, so subtract that from the total and you end up with each wheel weighing 18-20 pounds. (boom06) I had expected them to be in the 23-24 pound range.

Take a look for yourself:

My winter setup, though, thuds in at 46 pounds each, about 20 of which are the 205/60/16 Firestone Winterforce tire.

Anyway, just a fun fact.

Coincidentally, I just weighed the 17" wheel from our 2012 GT with the stock Toyo Proxes. (I'm hauling them to Discount Tire in my truck to go get swapped for a set of Nitto Motivos.) Total weight, 42 lbs. Tire rack site says the Proxes weigh 22 lbs each. That leaves 20 lbs for the wheel. Not exactly lightweight for a 17x6.5 (my perspective is distorted by years in autocrossing - Enkei RPF1s are 15.2 lbs for a 17x7.5) but for an OEM wheel, I guess it could be worse.

22lbs for a 16" wheel is actually pretty heavy. my protege 16's are 16lbs each, and my 16x8 FD wheels are 15lbs each. for reference, 17" miata wheels are 16lbs, too.

Your MZ5 would like the RPF1s. Are you getting any credit for the Toyos?

Yeah, I'd like the RPF1s too. But I would have tough time getting that one past the financial committee at home - even with the likely improvement in mpg.

Based on the price I saw online for the Nittos, I'm getting a good $100 credit per tire for the Toyos. (boom06) Of course, there are virtually no miles on the Toyos, less than 50 for sure.

Had no idea wheels and tires where so heavy.

My previous car for comparison sake:

2008 Toyota Highlander
OEM 17" rim with Michelin Latitude X-Ice 245 65 R17 is 28.175 kg or 62.11 lbs per wheel
OEM 19" rim with Toyo A20 Open Country 245 55 R19 is 30.350 kg or 66.91 lbs per wheel

Interesting...my OEM wheels don't say China stamped anywhere

That's because your wheels were made in Mexico and the drunken worker didn't give a s*** about stamping it. LOL, sorry I had to throw one last sarcastic comment LOL.

Exactly the reason, given Messican people and their beer drinking low quality of work, I took them off and use them as garage art :D:D

And of course since they can't read or write, they couldn't spell China or Mexico to save their life :p

More information, just for your information.
