The problem was the body control module. Cost was no charge. It feels great to have the car back. :)

There are two stickers on the firewall attesting to completion of "campaigns." I think that means these TSBs have been completed. The dealer called and the car is fixed. I did not take the phone call, but a single sensor was the cause. IIRC, the sensor in the bumper that fires the air bag(s)...

Do I have this correct? You can buy a key without FOB from the dealer, program it, and use it instead of the key with FOB attached to manually unlock the doors and operate the vehicle? If so, what is the programming procedure? My car is a 2010 Mazda 3 hatch. Thanks for any help.

Nice laundry list. Didn't you look at the car before purchase? As for the "smile," would you prefer mean eyes like on so many vehicles, or a menacing look like on the new Camaro? I want a six foot tall wing on the back.
