An event being organized and, I'm assuming, lead by someone who "will have their driver's license by then", makes me a wee bit nervous.

Not particularly, but this is my first FWD car. Do you not rotate front to rear? (dunno)
I just give the guys my keys and say "Rotate please" and they do it. Never watched to see where things get moved to.

'01 and up will have the variable valve timing thing (that, along with the higher compression ratio, seemed to add nothing to the car aside from the requirement to use premium unleaded)...the reason my '01 Miata was nicknamed "Pokey".
Finally got around to putting my K&N drop-in replacement filter in and resetting the ECU. I swear it feels smoother on the 1-2 shift now. We'll see for sure after the commute (all 5 miles of it) tomorrow.

As has been discussed in depth in the tire topic section, the MS3's stock tires are very highly rated as long as you don't expect all-season levels of winter performance and tread life out of your ultra...
