It looks a bit small for a splash shield, the slots won't help there either. It also looks considerably thinner than other skid plates I've seen for off road use. Not sure I'd trust it for either function really.

It does sound like an open loop timing advance issue. As soon as the engine reaches normal operating temp and goes closed loop, different timing advance settings eliminate the preignition. That's about the only thing that could cause such a difference between cold and normal orperating...
