Tricks or tools for removing valve spring retainers?

So, after spending an hour or so trying the "pen magnet in a deep socket" technique and not getting a single retainer freed, I did some reading and decided to pick up one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

When I opened up the package I thought it looked a bit on the large side, and sure enough the damn thing is about 1/8" too large in diameter to fit down in the lifter bucket bores! (hand) Even if it did fit, I'd be worried about the knurled surfaces gouging up the bores.

So what do you all use for getting those retainers off??

I suppose I could use a grinder to slim it down a bit and then wrap it in tape to protect the bores... but if I was going to go through all that trouble, I'm pretty sure I could've made my own tool with a piece of heavy conduit and a ring magnet.......

THey make a tool, that is a giant C clamp that pushs on the valve as well as the top retainer. Craftsman makes 1, you can pick it up at sears.
