I have an 04 hatchback with an auto tranny and this afternoon in while going up through the gears after about 20 minutes of driving, I lost 4th gear. The dash indicated the engine was trying to shift into 4th but would just spin and not engage. Later, it was having trouble shifting into 3rd and wouldn't let me force it into any other gear as the computer disabled the 'manual mode' too. Now, shifting into any gear is becoming clunky and rough and difficult to hold in gear. What may be the issue? I'm hoping to not replace the whole transmission as I simply do not have the money to do so now.
