Here's a question for you. Do you tap the build up of snow away from your mudflaps or leave it hang there? I am in the habit of tapping it away since I was a kid and did it on my Dad's car.

I think it is better to do that so that it does not built up to obstruct the wheels. In my condo, it helps the buildup of crud to drop off each night so that I have cleanish mudflaps in the morning.
 
You have to. Since you're a life long tapper you may not be aware: if it builds up too much it starts to rub the tires. This can make your tires feel wobbly almost like you have a flat. That's how I first learned to be a tapper.
A couple years ago I had a woman at work ask if I'd look at her tires ( being the office car nut). Felt like something was wrong. Yep, wheel well snow.
 
Just be sure you do a double tap; Just to be sure you dropped it to the ground. ��
