Smell of cat pee when turning on the hvac

Anyone else experience this. What is it and how do I fix it?

You either have a Clogged AC drain line or mildew on your evaporator coils see this link to fix, notorious problem on the CX9, you need to spray Kool It to kill the bacteria causing the foul smell

I had the same problem but used Avidien's idea and sprayed Kool It thru the exit drain AND thru the fan blower blades behind the glove compartment, also check your cabin filter above the fan blower blades and change if necessary, also see link below for Avidien's pictures of spraying thru fan blades : http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=208905&d=1412561653

Also Meguiar's came out with a product like a "fogger" where you run your hvac full blast in recirculation mode and that gets rid of the foul smell

This has nothing to do with mileage, we had one member with wet passenger side one week after buying brand new, turned out dealer had new cars under trees and all the crap and leaves clogged the drain lines. If you park under trees the more chances it will get frequently clogged.

The smell has more to do with how aggressive you use the AC, if you like it super cold, the more condensation will occur inside the vent ducts and mold and mildew will start occurring, that's why it's best to turn off AC five minutes and blow just room temp air before you destination to dry out any moisture.

I'll try cleaning out the line with a shop vacation and see how it goes. I'll report after. I also just ordered a charcoal activated cabin filter

Yeah I'm doing that next weekend. Should I go with royal purple with friction modifier or non friction?

That's been up for debate, but I'm going with what worked for Avidien >100,000 miles and myself @80,000 miles, both Royal Purple.

I understand that every 20k it should be done because there is a bad oil capacity. Is that correct?

yep, ridiculously small capacity for the size of the Cx-9!! only 1/2 liter!!
I'm at ~ 110,000 miles now with no problems ever, I think even 20K is pushing it,
I just change PTU oil every time I change my engine oil ~6500 miles
below is straight out of the owner's manual, I'm really surprised the new CX-9 also has very little oil capacity 1/2 liter
