should i buy?

:
92 VW Jetta 2.0L DOHC 16v
Hey guys ive been a VW guy since ive started driving but im selling my 92 jetta 16v (134HP ) and im thinking of buyin the mazdaspeed protege. Just wanted to know what are your thoughs on the car? Is it worth the price? How is the power? Also which one do you guys think would be a better choice....Mazdaspeed protege or the Ford Focus SVT Hatch? Thanx

msp msp!!! it's a great car despite its faults. and for what you can get them for now, it'd be a shame to pass it up :)

?Answer is simple... MSP over Focus anyday.. lets see a stock svt focus keep up with a msp it wont happen.. MSP Turbo meaning lots of fun with little mods.

MSP:p

its so much prettier...i dont have one, there are some issues with it that can be read about...such as the clunk and hesitation

seems like most who have it are glad w/their decision (w/some exceptions of cours)

all depends on what you are looking for though

but since the debate is between msp and a focus

I SAY GO MSP!!!

I'm still happy I chose mine. It's a fun car to drive. The Focus SVT is supposed to be nice as well. I just didn't want a hatchback bubble car.

I don't see any faults in this that my other 7 cars haven't had. In fact, it seems pretty darn solid, especially for being remanufactured in the US as a first model.

what kind of faults have u guys experienced? also i heard that the engine in the msp is the exact same as in the Protege5 but turbocharged. This raises questions if you were to up the boost of the turbo. How much psi can this engine handle without probs?
Im seriously considering this car. Problably going to pick it up as soon as i sell my jetta.

Personally I'd go with whatever one you can get cheaper. They're both very similar cars - Focus has somewhat fewer problems and more driver comforts but it's not quite as exciting.(shrug)

Around here you can get an SVT Focus for at least $2,000 less than a MSP. Depending on your area that might not be the case though.

Well, I just came from a volkswagen gti. The GTI had a better more comfortable interior with extra stuff (like heated mirrors, etc). MSP is more balanced, but has less power when compared to a chipped GTI. THe handling in the MSP is much better. It reall depends on you. If u want something more comfortable with a softer suspension, then I would stay with VW, but if you want something that is more balanced (minus small stuff) I would ge tthe MSP

If you havn't driven the Focus and the MSP yet, then go out and do so - while you're at it, make a day of it and drive the SRT4, a WRX, a Mini (if there is one in your area) and a Lancer - might as well hit all the cars in this category. Then you'll know first-hand what fits you the best. Don't skimp on the test drive either - take each car for a good spin, start off easy and mid-way through find a good place to nail it - just be careful of other cars around.

I drove a few cars on a weekend, I had my eye set on the SRT4, but I stopped at a Mazda dealership along the way. The Mazdaspeed was going to be the only car that left me grinning like a little kid that day =)

As far as the problems others have had with the car, I've had none so far, granted I'm only at about 500 miles right now.

One really sweet bonus is how much hp gain you can get for very little investment in upgrades, and there is certainly a wealth of knowledge on these forums to help you along the way.

Best of luck on your purchase =)

well in my area they are basectly the same price..so im trying to decide....they have both the same power output (170hp) except one is turbo the other is not. Just would like to know how much psi can a msp get without messing something up? and how much horsepower? Also will a msp keep up with a dodge neon srt-4 with little mods?

I am a ford tech and I bought the MSP and will never regret not getting the focus and was leaning towards the focus as a zetec man. I love my MSP. I would not even consider the focus in the same league. MSP handles like a european sports car and you cant buy a car with this handling for under 30,000 new. You get a factory turbo easily boosted higher for more power . good luck making any great power gains for cheap on the focus I know I have a zx2 escort same 2.0l . but the svt focus computer cant even be touched by anyone yet . GET THE MSP

yes that was my first choice of car (GTI 1.8T) but i checked with insurance company and i just cant afford it. MSP would be less on insurance also. Im leaning toward the MSP over the focus cause the focus is kinda like a honda engine...its a high reving engine and the torque peaks up high in the rpms along with the horsepower (7000Rpm). I guess im looking for something with a little more Torque and power throughout the rev range.

Seriously, you just gotta drive 'em to know what's going to work for you - simple as that.

The MSP runs at about 6psi stock, and can go up towards 10 safely with the right mods, there are some around here that are running 12 daily. 15 is generally considered the breaking point, and spiking is always a danger if you don't have something to protect against it.

An MSP with less than $1k in mods could easily have about the equivalent power of a stock SRT4... possibly more, depending on what mods were made and how well the system is tuned (I'm basing this on info I've gathered from these forums over the past few weeks). Check around these forums and you will start to get a good idea of the potential a MSP has. A Focus will need a turbo to be able to keep up with the upgradeability of the MSP, and that's $3k down the tube right off the bat. But again, I stress that the drive tells the tale - take them both for a spin =)
