I dipped my stock 16's too. Used about 2.5 cans but I put 6-7 light and medium-light coats on each wheel. (I have the polished alloy, chrome look wheels.) It holds up great, and no, colors are not a problem; check Dipyourcar.com.
You dont have to be good at painting, this stuff is magical...my rims look perfect in flat black and I've never painted anything prior to them. I used under 2 cans for all 4 wheels, I did 5 coats.
