Problem with RX-8 NEED HELP!!!!

Ok so this is for my mom's RX-8. 04 with auto. Car has tremendous hesitation and has been cutting off frequently. Also sometimes during acceleration a knocking or metal reattling is heard. I know what engine knock is and I am very familiar with cars and rotary power so save the remedial ed comments. Need help here. She puts 93 only in it. Could she just have gotten a bad tank of gas??? (maybe clogged the fuel filter) I mean this has been happening off and on for the last 3 months and the dealer is being no help.(never seems to do it when we take it in or so they say) Anyone else out there with anything like this???? Also is what I am hearing the rotors, kind of like pinging and piston rattle. Any help would be appreciated. It's getting dangerous for my mom to even drive the car as it cuts off in the middle of traffic.(help)

I know you have gone to the dealer but go again and demand that the car to be looked at and that it is unsafe to drive. They can not just flat out refuse to look at it

have you tried going to another dealer? that may help

unfortunately Mazda dealer/service network in the US is marginal at best, a lot of shady shops!!!

She just took it back again today and they fed her some bulls$%t about she was going to have to pay them to drop the gas tank and if they don't find anything then she would have to pay for the rental car and the diagnostic work. For anyone in Charlotte, NC....AVOID ALL HARRELSON dealerships THEY SUCK. They pulled this same stuff on me right after I bought my P5. Because of what happened with that(Mazda Corporate sent people in) they have a whole new Service staff so I figured that things would have gotten better but I guess not.

I believe the auto 04 has known to have certain problems like yours...
Goto rx8club.com and search the auto 04 problems and you'll find what others are saying...
good luck

Well just an update on what they found when she took it in. They pulled the fault codes and got a code that they had to call corporate about. corporate mazda had them send the pull the computer and send it to Cali. Should have the new one back late this week. Hopefully it will correct the problem. It just pisses me off that you have to get corporate involved before anything gets done. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys.

They had to 'pull the computer'? :-o

Anyways- the auto tranny RX-8s have had several issues (why would anybody buy an auto RX8? I love my 6 speed 04 RX8 btw). Many had engine overheating problems in Texas this summer. I certainly hope your mother's car has an easy to fix ECU issue. And www.RX8.com is the place for RX8 info btw.

My understanding there is they still have egg on their faces from the 7 debacle. Misdiagnosis, improper repairs, inexperienced mechanics and the like are most likely the root for this. A local friend just received a new motor this summer. Coolant seals I believe, but I'm pretty sure the higher-ups came into play. They want to make sure that the right thing is being done and I think the locals don't want to deal with it. It's a BS situation, but persistance is the key. A warranty is a warranty. The bad thing in that is the dealer has to be involved. If you could take it to anyone (or more specifically a rotary specialist) there wouldn't be these kind of problems I think.

Yeah, that is true. Many American Mazda dealers are just not equipped to deal with rotarys. The RX-7 left our shores in '95 and Mazda dealers started getting rid of their rotary mechanics and equipment. Now the RX-8 is back and Mazda is unprepared. The best advice is to find a rotary specialist or something. I am restoring an old '79 RX-7 and I found a former rotary mechanic who was let go after RX-7 folded in 95'. He has been quite helpful! zoom zoom...

so what ended up happening? does she drive the car hard ever, or does it just see stop/go city traffic. The auto's seem to have LOTS of problems with carbon buildup. Make sure she runs it hard, and redlines it at least once a week or so. Also keep using good gas, like shell and chevron and maby even run some fuel system cleaner thru when you change the oil.

Thanks for all of the help and comments guys....here is an update! Monday the dealer got the ecu back and got it installed on tuesday. When my mom called to find out the status they told her that the computer didn't fix the problem. I am not really sure what to do next but wait. She has been in a rental for over 2 weeks. I mean it is paid for by mazda but they aren't any closer to fixing her car. Last she heard they told her to stop calling and that they would call her when it was ready. She told them that she will continue to call until she gets her car fixed.

As for it being an auto, she is like 51 so I think it's cool that she is driving a sport's car. I tried to convince her on the 6 speed but she doesn't want to shift anymore. As for how she drives it....well she drives it like a 51 year old woman. I have told her that she needs to get on it every now and then and she says she does...Also I drive it whenever I visit her so I usually take it out and run it through it's paces. Check the oil the tires , fluids, etc... But I mean the car only has like 20K on it and has been doing this since about mid 15's

Well just frustrated as is she but thanks again for all of the advice. I will post again when the mystery is solved.

My 6speed is getting ready to go on its 3rd engine. It wont rev past 5-6K rpm when hot, and stalls out durring WOT. They still have no clue whats happening.

if it's in repairs for more than 30 days or 3 or more times for the same problem then.....

lemon-law it! (of course laws vary by state)

little update on KY's situation. it wasnt because the engine was blown....it was because the dealer were idiots and didnt want to find out what the problem was. So they assume it was the engine and replaced it. Which didnt fix anything.

After the 3rd time they finally figured out it must be a fuel system problem....this is what we been tellign them from day 1. So they replace the fuel system and so far it works great. AFTER the 3rd trip to the dealer.

The dealer called KY and said, "we couldnt replicate the problem." turns out they usually baby the car and shift way out of the RX8's power band. I mean you have 9,000 RPMs to play with and you shift at like 3-4K? So KY had to test drive it witht he master tech in the car. And he said now they can work on the problem becuase they know how the problem is casued.

The problem was what feels like a fuel cut and the car going in safe mode...we cried fuel system from day one.

This is how frustrating it is dealing with stealership. KY was really persistant in insiting that they fix the problem. and he let mazda know he was unsatisfied....the dealership actually called and asked why he was unhappy with the service. um because you didnt fix the problem.

in the end the real master tech was a great guy and should have been the one working on the car in the 1st place. he owns a RX8 too.

cant really say much more than spacemonkey. they had done some work on the fuel system (fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, fuel rails, injector wire harness) but when the problem came back they figured it wasnt related to that......even though I tried to say it feels like fuel cut......

in the end it was the fuel pump wiring harness....it had a short in it.

has run like a charm on the street ever since....even when driven hard. I will find out this weekend at the autox, since it ALWAYS happens durring my runs, but only sometimes on the street.

heres hoping (boom07)
