While cruising along a little bit of throttle input produces no response from the engine/tranny. It seems the car's brain is punishing me for wanting to go faster (and hence waste more gas). A little bit more throttle input 'wakes' up the engine/tranny and the car behaves in a sporty nature. Does anyone notice the same thing? Is Mazda trying to change the way we drive?

I believe Mazda has added an extra variable to the throttle. It is different from other cars.

It also reads the speed at which you depress the throttle. This has been discussed in the forum. You can get a downshift with a sharp movement on the pedal. You don't need to mash it to the floor, you just need to stab it. It can be a small quick movement and a downshift will occur and away you go. I love the logic in the transmission. Once you understand it and get used to it, you can almost drive it like a manual with just the gas pedal. a slow throttle press will mostly do nothing as you already noted.
