MP5 depreciation?

Just how big a depreciation has the Mazda Protege 5 taken?
I'm thinking that because there's like a million on the road (Atleast in Canadian Northwest), and the new Mazda 3 is coming out, I could possibly "bargain" for a really good price?

I can't find the proper Protege price, but the VMR one for a 2001 model was about... $13,000 CDN. (which is REALLY cheap. New MP5 would be $21,000 CDN MSRP).

Anyone know the amount of depreciation for P5s (and other Mazdas?)

I read in consumer reports that because of all these new car rebates, consumers are taking an avarage of a $3000.00 hit in depreciation in the 1st year of ownership. Honda in general has been really good about this. They really don't offer and rebates but the resale value of their vehicles is very good. Take into account a 2001 Integra GS-R. After 2 years, it still has retained almost 80% of it's value.

Yup, pretty sad huh. I got my P5 for $500 below dealer invoice, less a $1750 rebate and thought I was getting a great deal (Pretty much $18K OTD w/ auto, leather, abs/side airbags, polished alloys, and moonroof/6 CD package-MSRP was $21K. I've only had my car since April 25, 2003. I checked the kbb value on it, and it's not even worth $15K if I were to trade it in. Private party value was $16K. I should have done more research.

Not to dis you or acura. But the price you would get for a 2 year old GS-R if you took it for trade in is not 80%, according to Edmunds.com it would be $13,445(outstanding condition 24k miles) or about 3k a year. I assume the original price to be $20K+, so that is over 30% depreciation. Private party sale is $14,800 or more that 25% depreciation.

Go to Edmund.com to see how the other cars in the class compare. The P5 actually gets a less than class average depreciation. Trading or selling used cars will always lose money, with only the rare exception.

It is pretty easy to see the depreciation when you look at the dealer lease rate. The rate per month is the depreciation, about $200/month, $2400/year. That is for only 12k miles per year though.

Best advice, buy a car and stick with it, for 5 years at least. Any less and you might as well throw the money in the street.

I was checking ads for used P5's and one like mine...2002, 22,000miles were listed at like 13-14 grand, which is about what I owe still, so I'm pretty happy.

This car is holding A LOT better than most. All used cars suck right now and they have for several years.

it all depends on why you bought you pro. i bought mine with the intention of never getting rid of it. so to me it is worth far beyond what i paid for it. just my 2 cents

Never had an Acura, just used it as an example :)

I agree with erock regarding his advice. I expect to drive/own my P5 until it either becomes unreliable or 115-120k (whichever comes first).

I figure the car is good for at least 100k with proper maintenance and routine check-ups.

Actually, I'm asking this question so that I know what kind of a price would seem "reasonable" (And not a low-ball price) to a private seller (I'm on the other end of the table).

But if I had a P5, I would probably keep it until 275,000 km (cuz all my other cars are that and higher). And then... buy another P5! mwa ha hahaha... j/k Probably be like the Mazda SDT (supder duper 3) or something by then...

So a good gauge would be, if driven around 15,000km a year, yearly leasing value?

That should be pretty easy if my escort gt w/gen1 engine is any measure. It was a 91 and I bought it from a friend with 105Kmiles. Except for tires, oil/filter, plugs and dist cap/rotor I spent exactly $100 in maintenance up to 220Kmiles. The lone failure was the rubber intake hose from the air filter box. No brake job, clutch, nothing. It cost about $2k in repairs for 220K-270K when I lost a cylinder. Most of that was a valve job at 220K.

You should be able to get 120K no problem. This was the one of the main reasons I had no trouble deciding when I saw the P5.

actually i am not sure about the depreciation rate for our P5 right now ....
but i believe our P5 are much better than the civic or corolla in the market .....
therefore i believe the second hand price for our P5 should worth for its value ....

Be thankful you don't own a Focus. I bought mine in August 2001. Sticker was like $14,500. Got it for around $12,500. Still owed just under $10,000 and the highest trade-in value I got was $5700. Most dealerships were only gonna give $5000. And it was loaded and in pretty much excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition.

well i just looked up the NADA price on my car for trade in, and you cant input 2003 yet, you just get N/A for all the prices...however i put in a 2002 with my milage and its 11,500 for trade in...considering its a year newer, im sure its worth around 12,500 or so...so ive taken less than a 4k dollar hit...not too bad for a relatively cheap car
