de-clawing is inhumane - and illegal in alot of places.....cats get great pleasure out of scratching things, and it is vital to their their health as its instinctual.
I have 2 indoor cats, and heres what i've done with both:
2 Litter trays, one for number 1's, and one for number 2's...the cat will learn this him/herself over time...
Clean the litter trays out DAILY...this doesnt mean replacing the litter, just scooping out the clumps
Get a BIG cat scratcher, something that your new kitty can climb on top of, and something that he/she can scratch to bits and you wont care....discipine your cat by clapping your hands loudly or shaking a can full of rocks should the cat scratch where its not spose to. If this doesn't work, 1:20 mix of lemon juice or vinagar with water in a spray bottle will be enough to frighten but not harm the cat. Don't do it too often or it'll lose effect (i use the can for if the cats sit on the kitchen bench, the water for if they scratch and the loud clap if they are fighting.....so as not to confuse them!
)
if the clawing gets bad you can get perspex claw covers put on by your vet..they are like glue on nail extensions, cat can still claw but wont damage your furniture
Invest in cat nip....good for calming your cat down when he/she gets stressed..just spray on his/her fav blanket and plop the cat on it...it'll goto sleep in seconds. cat nipped furniture is less likely to get scratched or pee'd on.
Clean Pee up immediately! this stuff reaks if its left the fester.... if your little one pees on your bed (and it will if you let it sleep with you, at least once i guarentee it will!) - clean the bed straight away, don't wait till morning!
Get the cat vacinated, flea treated, and desexed in accordance with your vet's recommendations.
DONT let it outside...it'll destroy native wildlife and get in fights with other cats - this gets costly. If it must go outside, supervised exersize preferably with a leash is the best way to go.
Pay the extra money for some GOOD cat food. I spend about $30 aud a fortnight on the cat buscuits i feed my 2 with - i could spend as little as 3....reason for good food is usually it makes their stools smaller and less smelly. You can get special indoor cat food blends as well, which moderate their diet for the decreased amount of exersize they will have being inside.
Play with your cat and read books to your cat while it is a baby - this will get it used to you and your voice, and make it more likely to bond with you - you will also get more enjoyment out of the cat if you do this.
if you are going to feed the cat wet meat, get proper butchered meat, not canned crap - canned crap has beaks and feet minced up...you wouldn't eat it, why should your cat? low quality fresh cuts minced up at your local butcher, as well as chicken necks and the like are good.
toys - ball of string, scrunched up ball of aluminium foil and an old neck tie are all the toys my 2 have ever had, and they love them all
bed, my cats have a couple of old/no longer used towels and blankets piled up to sleep on - most of the time they chose to sleep on the sofa
cats can be very enjoyable animals if you train them young and look after them. if you don't do the prep work, they can be absolute menaces.
