Is this a common problem?

My '03 was acting strange when starting out in first gear, the rpm's would be all over the place and then when I was stopped, the car would stall out after a minute or so. It seemed to be a similar problem that I had with my MX-3, which had a crack in the intake hose. It turned out that the same hose was cracked on the P5. Since the MX-3 was around 15 years old when its hose cracked, I didn't think much of it, but the P5 is only 5-6 years old. Is this a common problem with mazdas?

Huh. I mentioned to my mechanic the other day that the idle in our 02 P5 was a little off. It fixed itself but he mentioned he'd take a look at the tubing after the air filter (is that where this is?) because it's fairly common for them to crack.

I guess he was telling the truth.

Yeah, it is the tubing after the air filter. I guess the ecu or whatever goes crazy when more air gets in than what the MAF is telling it. :)

It cost 50 at the dealer. I had to buy one for my 2001 Protege es. When my wife wrecked it a month or so after i bought the part I took it off the car and put it on my P5

I had the same problem on my 1993 Ford escort Gt. All I did was sealed it with some silicon and it worked. Or just order a new one.

I don't think it's a coincidence that happened on your Escort. That car and the Mazda 323/Familia shared some parts due to the Mazda/Ford marriage.

This wasn't a common problem until now because these cars are just now getting old enough for it to happen on enough of them to be considered common. s*** flexes & vibrates, s*** under the hood of these cars gets baked, rubber s*** gets dry rotted due to time, & s*** deteriorated faster in inclimate conditions without garages. Add them together & this should be no surprise to anyone. Don't bother with a used one because it'll have same thing happen soon. Buy an SRI, CAI or the new factory piece.
