I got the dealer to cough it up for me.

That's great! I was able to get my dealer to throw in a LoJack for free instead cuz he couldn't find me a car with an alarm in my area.

The starter is a cool idea, but I've had enough fun already playing with wires behind my dash, it's nuts down there.... I need a distribution block.

How nice, walk up to your car, open the door, get in, put your foot on the brake, push a button, and go. No fumbling with keys for anything.

And then the batteries in the key die and you are (owned) !!

There is no battery in the Protege 5 key.

Start button is good when you are racing and suddenly your cars engine stops, then you dont have to mess with the key, just push the button and off you go. So its not just for looks!

It's for looks and it also gets me through those nights I miss some racing on Speed Channel.

There is a good reason that some new cars are coming out with push-button starters.

Some makers, including Mercedes, Cadillac, and I believe Dodge with the '03 Viper (not sure on that tho), are coming out with totally passive security/starter systems. You still have a key fob - like any normal alarm/starter/remote entry - but the fob transmits a signal automatically. When you walk up to your car, you leave the key and fob in your pocket. The doors unlock themselves when you get close. And the fob allows pushbutton starting of the car - no pressing a button to unlock the doors, and no turning of the key to start the car.

Other than these systems, push-button starters are all for "looks".
