I Enlisted Today!

Thank you all for your words of wisdom and advice. I am joining the reserve unit here in Green Bay (1391 Bulk Fuel Specialist).

Basic Training - 13 weeks
MCT - 2 weeks
MOS School - Not sure how long

I figure I'll be training for the better part of 5 months.

I'll be sure to post when I get my 10 days of leave at the end of basic.

Awesome move Brian! It's a life changing decision but it takes a hell of person to make the Marine commitment. You will be looked up to by many people for the rest of your life. Congratulations. If you need a car-sitter, I'm a good choice. I'll keep your car 'fresh" with autocrosses and such.(birthday)

I finally enlisted in the Marine Corp today. Its been a long process but I finally got through MEPS.

I ship to basic training (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com /><st1:City w:st=<ST1:pSan Diego</ST1:p</st1:City>) on January 25, 2005.<O:p</O:p

I am very excited and nervous at the same time.

Just thought I would let everyone know.

(pullup) <O:p</O:p

Make your country proud, and pray that the leaders of this country do not continue to make horrible descisions that toss away young lives like yours.

51st FW or 7th AF? They start rebuilding the BX yet...when I last left lodging wasn't built and NCO dorms/mcphearson community center went up in flames.

remember to put in your mileage pass if going over 60 miles from base ;) I burned myself not doing that once!

I did 4 years in the Army (I'm not hear to get in a pissing contest over who's best...) My brother's in the Marines, in Warrant Officer Candidate school right now, on his 2nd or 3rd enlistment I think. Just keep your s*** dress right dress, your uniform clean, and you'll do well.

Also remember it's not a normal job...you can't quit, so make the most of it & get some close freinds when you get permanently stationed. My first 6 months sucked after I got permanently assigned because I didn't know anyone. I still keep in touch with my buddies from time to time, and I got out in '98!

Good Luck Jarhead!!!!! :D (thumb)

Good luck man. Now i feel good knowing theres another guy from this forum who notonly share my love for mazda but also knows the meaning of LOVE FOR COUNTRY. I may not be a soldier here but i share the dedication and sacrifices of every US service men and women. IM a reserve Officer in Philippine Airforce.. Good luck again and God Speed.

Congratulations to you my friend. Defend us well. I talked with the Marine recruiter my senior year of high school (the local Marine recruiter had presented me with the Semper Fidelis award for music) about joining the Marine Corps band. I'll never forget what he said to me about basic training, he said "Son, to be in the Marine Corps band you gotta first be a Marine." You guys have my respect. If there's one thing I wish I could change it would be to have served in some aspect. Of course my life would be very different now, and I must admit I like my life. But there's always that "What if..." in my mind. Good for you - you'll never have to ponder that thought.

But there's always that "What if..." in my mind.
I am 21 years old, and am tired of that "what if." Right now I am just sick of school, I am doing good (3.2 gpa) but cant stand it anymore.

All my friends think Im crazy, from what I have heard from other people that seems normal.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement.

What is your main reason for joining? To stand up for our country or get outta school? What do you want out of it? Do you get money for school after your basic training and if so wouldn't you want to apply that to an education towards a career? I'm not dogging you by any means. I pat you on the back because i could never join the army, marine, navy, etc..... but i ask because i work with two former army soldiers that haven't done s*** with their lfe and i used to work with a die-hard marine that joined because he was a knucklehead and then came out with the same attitude, but he was trained now as well which made him a beast. Good luck and i wish you the best.

Da 6, I'm in the 621st ACS which is obviously under the 7th. The BX just opened up a little before Thanksgiving. The thing is sweet!! The main base lodging is only a few years old and there are new dorms being built like crazy. The new airman dorms are great seeing as they won't have to share rooms anymore. Sorry for taking the thread in a direction from other than it was intended. Again, best of luck to smithers_0990. ~Matt

What is your main reason for joining?
To get some direction out of my life, and I have always wondered if I could hack it.

I am getting the GI Bill out of it, but that is just a bonus. I would have joined without that. I just need some "motivation." I will be going back to school when I get done with my training, to 1, finish my business degree, and 2, get a degree in automotive tech.

I am ready and willing to go to war if I have to. I am aware that my attitude toward war will change drastically if I do have to go, but at this time I am ready.

Later

have fun, and what an excellant reason to join. job satisfaction , serving your country, and feeling good about yourself (not in any order) are the best reasons to join, and the same reasons i did.

i was in college and making a lot of money but it sucked. i made no difference whether i came to work or not as an important american figure.

im glad you joined, and even if you dont like it, and get out, you will be glad you joined as well.

Congratulations, I spent 5 years in and loved every minute of it. I enlisted in nov of 1994 and have never regreted the time I spent on Active Duty one minute. I only got out because I wanted to make more money in the private sector. Now some 5 years later I am. I picked up Sergeant a little over 3 years... shoot for that and your money. Ask to go on every meritorious board there is, every Marine of the Quarter thing Marine of the Year...you name it ask to be on the board. Put your time in studying and reviewing even after boot camp. I was meritoriously promoted through my ranks and it will bring your the respect of your piers and subordinates. OK, enough ranting, on to my advice for you:

First bit of advice.... dont' go to boot camp with a tattoo of a Bull Dog or the Word Marine anywhere on you, they'll find it and you will pay on the quarter deck, oh will you pay. Those who where Guides or Squad Leaders (me), know that we paid each and everyday almost. My platoon, 3070 Lima Company, when we got to Camp P. my Senior wanted to be the first to the pit, so he marched us right there after getting off the bus, no putting s*** away, just straight to the pit and worked us for like 30 minutes. Anyway, it was an honor to be the hardass platoon in boot camp.

Secondly, don't have your family send you any food in boot camp. Oh yeah, if you get a good pic of your girl, share it with the others....(hahaha). Your D.I.'s will feed to you how they will steal old Mary Jane Rotten Crotch from you, it's funny.

Third, never complain, just do the job and deal with it. Everything that is going to be done to you has been done to thousands of others, you are not the first, nor will you ever be the last.

Fourth, It is a honor for a Marine Corps Drill Instructor to train you in the image he things a Marine Should be. Never think that they don't care, that they hate you, they are training you to be someone they could trust next to them in a fighting hole, or in a hallway in Falujah fighting the enemy.

Fifth, never regreat the decision you have made, NEVER! Don't listen to people who say you've made a bad mistake. I was 20 when I joined and it was the best decision I made. I used my G.I. Bill when I got out and right now it's something like $1000 a month while your in school full-time.

Ok, enough of me rambling on, Semper Fidelis to all my fellow Marines. You have to earn the Title MARINE. Honor, Courage, Commitment.

My marine recruter was a lil out there...He literaly stalked me! I agreed to meet him at his office....on the way out the door with car keys in hand...he's in the driveway sitting on the hood of his gov! I never heard him pull up or close the door and this is almost summer time when we had the screens in! Then I'm in school chilling with my girl and I open the door to leave the basement and he's standing on the other side of it! later we went to class...blinds closed and window on door is wallpapered up cause that was the day we passed the handgun around "Criminal Justice Class" and like soon as our teacher put it away and opened the blinds.....You guessed it! I gave up and went in and took asvab and got 30....Air force recruter came in and basicly sold me on the cop job. This was before sept 11 so no bonus 4 me :( prabaly a lil too late but id your recruter take you to the nearest base and have you talk to guys that have thet job you picked?

you didnt get a bonus because of your asvab score, not because it was before sept 11th.

Um....31 is to get into marines...40 is to get into usaf! Jobs with bonuses at that time were playing with aircraft armament systems and stuff like that. Before 9-11 secrity forces wasn't considered a critical carrer yet...
