Help me pick out some new rubber!

Hey guys, long time no see.
So with nearly 28k miles, it's about time to ditch the stock poortenzas in favor of something wider and grippier. I've been strongly leaning towards a set of 235/40/18 Continental Contiextremecontact DW tires. I love that they have such a long life (UTQG of 340 AA A) and are rated extremely well on tirerack.com; not to mention the price, just $150 bucks per tire in that size.

The link to these tires:

I always like to confer with the forum geniuses before pulling the trigger on a new car item though, especially one with a price tag of $600+. Anyone have any other suggestions for tires in that class?
Also, is there any way I could pull of a 245/40/18? I've been thinking about it but am a little concerned with rub and clearance. I'd really rather sacrifice the 10mm in tire width and save myself the trouble of rubbing and whatnot if there would be potential problems.
Thanks so much in advance for your help!
