Engine overheated after replacing catalytic converter

Had the rear catalytic converter replaced with an Eastern aftermarket three days ago. The stock cat had rusted through and broke off.

Highway driving yesterday, and the engine overheated and shut down. Didn't notice any fluid leaks.

Any reason the two would be connected due to shoddy installation or faulty product?

It may be the wrong cat for your car. Have the shop temporarily remove the cat before you take your car for a drive. That should determine whether the cat is incorrect/faulty. A couple of other possibilities:

a) A paper or plastic sheet got pulled up against the radiator. (Check this, first before doing anything else.)
b) Thermostat is stuck shut.

Thanks for the response. Failed thermostat was causing the overheating. Separate mechanic (not the one who installed the cat) replaced the thermostat and didn't think there was any relation to the cat installation.

He also said that the head gasket is in the early stages of failing. One good thing after another.

Thanks.

A failed head gasket can allow combustion gasses to super-heat the coolant, but as long as your engine is running cool, you're okay for now.
