CX-5 Oil Change with Filter

Our 2014 CX5 with the 2.5L had the first oil change included at the dealership. Oil change #2 myself last night. Crazy easy. Probably the cleanest oil change I've ever done.

Warm change, drained for 10-15 min.
New Mazda PE01-14-302 filter.
5 Quart Castrol Edge 0W-20 jug from Walmart.

Put in all 5 quarts, and I'm at about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up between the dots on the stick.

see, thats my experience too. Its supposed to take 4.4 qt, but takes all 5 and asks for more... (shocked)

I was going to do my oil but the drain plug was some crazy allen wrench. I used the biggest I had but it still wasn't an exact match. Is there some sort of replacement plug I can buy for next time that uses a standard socket wrench?

Just go to Sears and buy an 8mm allen.

Of course you can. Go to your favorite auto parts store and ask for the correct sized plug. Easy.

The drain plug is an 8MM Allen size and I bought one (Sears) to use with my 3/8 inch ratchet wrench. I also bought a fram filter cup wrench (Wallmart) which makes the removal very easy. My engine is the 2.5L and it took 5.25 quarts of oil to hit the top mark. 5 quarts will get you about 3/4 of the way to the maximum level. Next time I will just dump in a 5Q jug and call it good. Easiest oil/filter change I can remember. Ed

Thanks for the hints, iracemine. Just did my first - the car's second - oil change in ours (first was free at the dealer). Fairly straightforward, but I wouldn't call it the easiest out there. I hate when the filter is behind/beyond yet close to the drain, 'cos it makes it such a bugger to get the filter off without getting mucky oil all over your hand. <grrrr>

Also, another tip for others who've yet to do this. The factory oil is SO thin that it rockets out a yard or so back from the drain when you first open it. Get plenty of plastic or newspaper on the ground first (unless you have a lift and a big-assed drain funnel :))

After you just loosen the filter so you can turn it by hand, put a plastic zip lock bag around it and finish unscrewing it. I have also heard of people punching a small hole in the filter to drain it before removal.

Just did my first oil change yesterday. The first one was free at the dealership. The good: The placement of the oil filter and drain plug were spot on. I wish every car was like that.

The bad: Didn't know it took an 8mm male hex. Fortunately, I had an 8mm hex key which I used. It took a lot of effort to get off as I didn't have much leverage with the hex key. The dealership really put it on tight. I also ended up using the same metal crush washer.

Next time: In the future I'll buy a male 8mm hex socket so I know I'm torqueing the oil pan drain plug correctly. Second, I'll replace the metal crush washer. I wish they used a copper crush washer instead. On my cars with the copper washer I've never had an issue.

Overall, it was really simple. I didn't even have to jack up the car and put it on jack stands or pull it up on my ramps. I just had the front tires in my garage which is slightly elevated compared the driveway.

Yea, that hex can be annoying especially if you are doing the change with a floor jack or the like. I replaced mine with a valve.

Did my wife's first oil change on her 2015 GT earlier today, I must be fat as I needed to drive her car up on some 2X4 for better clearance. Took the advice of an earlier poster and hammered the oil filter tool on to the original as it was on very hard. Came off, but now the tool is stuck on the oil filter and I cannot remove it LOL.

Purchased Castrol Edge 0-20W and also a Purolator filter. Poured all 5 quarts inside.

Just out of interest, I removed the 8mm hex bolt but I could not for the life of me see a crush washer. I checked the bolt and also the oil sump nothing was there. I installed without crush washer... Oh well..

That's not good! Sounds like you lost the washer in the drained oil. The drain plug will not seal for long without the washer.

Did my first oil change today @ 3K miles w/ an OEM filter and Mobil 1 0W-20. While I was at it, I installed a Fumoto valve to make the future oil changes clean and quick.

It's an F106N model.

Did you go with valve with nipple? IIRC the 106N?

Quick Question

Did not search too hard to see if this thread exists. But here I go anyway.

0W20 oil or 5W20 in a pinch. 4.4 quarts. Fram oil filter 6607.

Its the second door from the front in the under cover. It takes two Phillips screws or 10mm sockets AND one fingernail. First pop the plastic pop rivet by pulling down on the center circle and then pull out. Next unscrew the 10mm/Phillips bolts. After that you have to bow the plastic in the center and the door will come down with out breaking the tabs that hold it in place. I recommend using the screw driver on the screws as they only screw into the plastic and can strip very easily.

First remove the filter. Before putting on the new filter remove the 8mm drain plug. (Make sure to wait for all the oil to drain out. do this in the am before the car is driven. That way there is no oil up in the head. Being that it is 0W oil it should take approx one beer to completely drain out.) Snug up the plug. I say snug cause it has a aluminum washer that can get easily distorted if tightened too tight. Then replace with your choice of filter making sure to oil up the gasket before installation and hand tighten.

Reinstall door by bowing the door and sliding in all the tabs into place. next reinstall bolts and pushing in plastic rivet. Next open up oil filler cap and fill 4.4 quarts. Close cap then start car. Stop car and check oil level.

I used 0W20 Mobile 1. I also used Fram gold 7317 and .1 more quart of oil to make up the size of the filter.

I just had one question, did you need a ramp or was the ground height clearance enough elevation to perform the oil change comfortably?

Yea I can tell,I just got my OEM bundle in the mail for a cheap price and I just wanted to see where the exact filter is and I can see that its too tight of a spot.Did you use the car jack or another one that you bought?
