Having been "burned " with the BT in my previous vehicle (2013 Subaru Outback LTD), I made sure that the VR and BT setup worked to my satisfaction.
Liked the OB though, and hated the infotainment setup! I wrongfully assumed that it would function at least as well as a departed 2011 Hyundai Tuscon...WRONG!
All systems have different capabilities. My 2015 CX-5 GT Bose setup DOES d/l the phone-book using 2 different Android phones...1 Jellybean 4.2 and 1 Lollipop 5.03.
You might get a friend with Android, to pair their phone to your head unit (you can always delete it) and see if it really is a Mazda issue or if Apple "genius'" are full of it!
It is strange that your head unit (not sure exactly what you have) does not d/l the phone-book. That is inconvenient!
You would think by now, all manufacturers would get it right.
