bad mpg with cruise and mid issues

Why is it that I can get better mpg without cruise control? I live in a semi hilly area but I can get 16 mpg going up a hill while cruise gets around 12. It also doesn't seem to coast going down hill I haven't seen it get above 54 mpg while I get 99.9.

Also the little mid thing piss me off with its range display. When I left for work it said 80 miles to empty now it says 11. Problem is I only drove 40 miles. When pulling a hill or accelerating it will drop 1-2 miles. But yet coasting down a hill getting 50-100mpg it won't go up, which makes zero sense to me.

Anyone else have these issues?

Cruise control is a convenience feature, not a gas saving one. It'll go hard on the throttle going up hills then do everything it can to keep the speed from creeping up going downhill. I hardly ever use cruise anymore, only if my right foot needs a short break.

On flat roads though, cruise will do about the same as a right foot.
