anyone have a good explanation of ISO? i am just starting to get into all this, but it seems when the iso is higher, the pictures are more grainy... i went shooting today and when i got home i was dissapointed with the results, and the iso was set to like 1280 or something. i turned it down to 400 or maybe 200 i dont remember and took some more pictures and they came out really clear. when and why would you want high ISO?

ISO is the equivalent of film speed. The higher the ISO, the lower the signal to noise ratio, which means you get more noise, and yes, more disappointing results. The up-side is that you get to use a faster shutter speed or a narrower aperture. Basically, when you get ready to take a photo, the first thing you should do is decide what you want your depth of field to look like. Set your aperture to attain that. Next figure out what shutter speed you want. Last, set your ISO so that you get a proper exposure. This is something that a lot of people do backwards, but I think it's a mistake.

We could get into a whole discussion on signal to noise ratio, but suffice to say, if you properly expose a photo, you should be perfectly fine shooting at very high ISO settings. I've taken plenty of keepers at ISO3200 on my 50d (which is the camera's highest "true" setting). Always remember to look at the histogram on your camera, and make sure that the graph is loaded to the right side.

read this article. it changed my photography life.
