2nd gear tick

What would cause a repetitive tick when only in second gear?

I havent driven it further than around the block since i heard the tick. The tick is only present when the car is in second gear. Currently, from the brief test drive that i did, the clutch still remains smooth through the gears.

Has anyone experienced this?

The gear may have a damaged tooth, no way to tell unless you pull the trans and split the case.

Well the tranny is the last item for me to go through. I guess i'll be going through it soooner than planned.

I just find it bizarre that the clutch is still so smooth, the engine pull/delivery is smooth, but you can hear the noise even if the car is stopped while in second gear (w/ clutch pushed in of course). The sound, is soft "ti ti ti ti ti".

My diff had a chipped tooth and it would make a 'wahh wahh wahh' kind of groaning sound when driving slow but you couldn't hear it above 20mph. Hard to say what it is for sure but that is my guess.
